Beyond Modus 9

Barrel Aged Sour Red – 9% ABV. Following on from last year’s Beyond Modus, we have blended Coolshipped modus operandi with a Bordeaux red wine barrel to finish this beer for another year. Matured in freshly emptied red wine barrels, it screams ripe autumnal fruits, a vivid acidity and hints of Bourbon subtlety.

Bottle, thanks to Fergus, split at the L6 Xmas Blast, 15/12/22. Mahogany brown pour with a beige cap that veers edgewards. Nose is tarte fruit rinds, vinous, cherry skins, funk, dry rot. Taste comprises sharp acidic fruit notes, wood must, fruit balsams, vinegar, damp oak. Medium bodied, fine carbonation, drying close with a noticeable acidic rise. Solid.

Bottle shared in London - many thanks to Fergus. Pours mostly clear brown-gold with a frothy, off-white head. Light sweet flavour with some toasted malts, leathery berries, mellow acidity, a little lemon. Medium bodied with fine, massaging carbonation. Quenching finish, some toasted wood, more leathery berries, modest acetic bite. Great stuff.

Xmas Boozy Bottleshare. Thanks to Fergus. Clear deep amber beer, small pale tan head. Light palate, smooth and semi dry, decent fine carbonation. Thin malts. A somewhat acetic cherry turning to vinegary. Light finish. Over acetic for me.

21st November 2022; Monthly Shrewsbury Beer Share, five guys and loads of beer. Can't remember who brought this bottle of sour puss, but thanks anyway! Red amber body, off-white head. Vinegar and tart berries, what a great combination (not)!

75cl bottle @ monthly tasting, Chez Sophie, Nov 22. Dark reddish brown appearance, off-white head. Super duper.. lovely dark flanders character, nice balance of malt and sweetness, quite a smooth palate with a well integrated sourness, soft cherry and berry notes.
