Be careful . . . this Beast is fierce. Its bite comes initially from raw cacao – the intensely-flavored little bean that gives chocolate its toothsome character (pun intended), but is followed quickly by the glorious bitterness and floral aroma of heaps of Noble hops. Just the right amount of chewy, roasted malts round out those edgy flavors to create the perfectly-balanced, creamy stout.

Draught @ Bruxellensis. Deep dark color. Roasted malt aroma with coffee. Strong roast flavor with blackcurrant and even a hint of smoke. Long roastbitter aftertaste. A taste bomb.

Bottle in NYC. Pours black with a huge, beige cream head. There’s some cocoa in here, sure, as well as modest roast, but unfortunately the beer is a bit sour. Nicer (but not necessarily pleasant) chocolate notes in the finish. Some ash and tobacco. Light bodied with explosive carbonation. Too bad.

22 oz bottle. Got at Table and Vine; West Springfield, MA. Opaque black, thick full tan head that dies slow. Lots of lacing down the snifter. Pleasant nose of cocoa, roasted barley and light ash. Taste follows the nose. Lots of roasted barley I get the most from the taste, with other mentioned in aroma. Very light body for a stout. It lacks some depth, a bit to thin, not the chewy and creamy like the commercial description indicates. However it does have a hop bitterness as the stout warms. Dry finish. A nice stout for the hot summer months. It doesn’t fill you up and is quite easy to drink. With a lower ABV you can enjoy it without getting smashed. I enjoyed this stout. Would buy again.

Cask (gravity) @ GBBF 10, Great British Beer Festival, Earls Court Exhibition Centre, London, England.Clear dark brown color with a average, frothy, good lacing, mostly lasting, off-white head. Aroma is moderate to heavy malty, chocolate, cacao, moderate roasted and coffee. Flavor is moderate to light heavy sweet, acidic and bitter with a long duration, cold coffee acrid bitter, fruity - chocolate acidic. Body is medium, texture is oily, carbonation is flat. [20100803]

Cask@GBBF2010. Pitch black colour with mediumsized brown head. Aroma is liquorice, chocolate, some coffee as well as dark dry fruits. Flavour is quite much the same in a rather lovely balance. Very pleasant.

22oz bottle at the DC local tasting. Pours an opaque black with very little cloudy beige head. Aroma of mushrooms, dirt, rotting logs. I’m not kidding. I guess the cocoa nibs made it smell that way? Flavor is lightly sweet, dirt, cigarette ash, mushrooms. Tastes like it was brewed with dirt. Watery finish. This was gross.
