From Muzzlehatch, thank you. Red in color and lightly carbonated. Full bodied malt aroma with a touch of smoke, maybe peat, and some fruit, and brown sugar. Flavor is much like the aroma, with loads of sweet malt, more fruit, dirt, and dry red wine. At the top of its class, very full overall. No hop presence, and that is fine for the style.

Brown bottle, 341 ml, gift from Mario d’Eer, bottled on August 20 2007, received on August 25 2007, savoured on August 30 2007; eye: dark burgundy, clear, slight effervescence, nice creamy beige head, no lacing; nose: tobacco, candied fruits, roasted malt, dark chocolate, cocoa, a tiny bit of vanilla, scotch, peat; mouth: tastes make themselves wait a little but then there is an impressive arrival of roasted malt with its enjoyable acridness, lots of caramel, a touch of hops, then a wave of scotch, peat, a bit of smoke, a bit of alcohol, long finale in caramelized malt where the bitterness is more present than expected, nice balance between all of the tastes, slight astringency, medium-full body, rich, grainy texture, rather sweet and bitter, not much carbonation; overall: quite likable FRANÇAIS Bouteille brune, 341 ml, cadeau de Mario d’Eer, embouteillé le 20 août 2007, reçue le 25 août 2007, savourée le 30 août 2007; œil : bourgogne foncé, claire, très légère effervescence, belle mousse beige crémeuse, pas de dentelle; nez : tabac, fruits confits, malt torréfié, chocolat noir, cacao, vanille, scotch, peat; bouche : saveurs se laissent attendre, puis arrivée impressionnante du malt torréfié avec son côté âcre agréable, beaucoup de caramel, petite touche de houblon, puis une vague de scotch, peat, un peu de fumée, un peu de chaleur d’alcool, longue finale en malt caramélisé où l’amertume est beaucoup plus présente que je m’y attendais, belle équilibre entre tous les goûts, légère astringence, corps moyen-corsé, riche, texture granuleuse, plutôt sucré et amère, peu carbonatée, très légère astringence; en résumé : bien aimé

(Bottle 50 cl) Courtesy of Rastacouere. Pours a clear, reddish brown with a yellowish brown head. Sweetish, roasted malt with lovely burned caramel in the nose. Extremely intense and full body with sweetish, burned caramel notes. Some bitterness in the finish. Lovely. 090507

Bottle thanks to MartinT, another great hookup. Shared with gotmos and friend. Poured into a small tulip glass. Nice dark brown color with a small head. What I like about this is its really a niovel flavor. I wouldnt call it a Scotch ale but there really is nothing closer. Its got a really nice blend of cocoa, roastiness, and coffee. A very novel blend where the flavors greatly meld together yet are independent of each other. It is rather easy to drink and -feels like it has great aging-ability. The mouthfeel is nice and silky with a low carbonation and a nice thick body. Some moderate bitterness. Very good stuff, thanks again Martin.

Many thanks to richlikebeer for pouring this gem at the HW Open House - never in a million years did I think I’d get to try this stuff - they’re touting it as being "the next Alesmith Wee Heavy," and I have to say that I believe them - aroma of dates, plums, scotch (wood barrels and all) - chewy, full-bodied with a thick mouthfeel - woody at first, fading to make room for dark fruity esters and, of course, smoked malt - caramel and plums finish, with just a faint hint of whiskey - very nice indeed.

Bottle: Poured a deep burgundy color ale with a huge foamy head with good retention. Aroma of sweet malt with a subtle touch of peat is quite interesting. Taste of caramel, molasses and a subtle peat finish. Body is a bit thinner then expected but has a nice creamy consistency. Alcohol is very well hidden and provide a nice warming feel tot his beer. I find it hard to rate this beer while trying to remember some good (and bad) memories of the previous example of this beer. Very good for the style but not sure it is worth that much. 2007 vintage drank in early 2008: No peat malt detected in this version with less malt noticeable. Definitely not as good as the previous batch and not something I would be consistently buying at $6.29 per 12 ounces.

Burnished dark brown colour. Rich aroma - earthy, toasty, molasses, halva, nuts...and not the cheap version of any of these but the best stuff around. The flavour carries all of these same elements in the same quality, plus a little woodiness. Rich and complex with bright, defined flavours at the apices of their respective spectra, this is a hakapik to my previous concepts of how good a scotch ale can be.
