Unusually light, agile, yet complex, Unicorn hasn’t changed in over a hundred years. It was originally brewed by Frederic for his father William, at the Unicorn Inn, from where the beer eventually took its name, and where the Robinsons Brewery still stands. Dripping with heritage, it’s a magnificent, thirst-quenching, thoroughbred bitter. The first of a bloodline that continues to this day.

Cask at Briton's Protection, Manchester. Pours cloudy orange, white head. Malty, some vague fruit, caramel, sweetish, some light bitterness in finish. Light bodied.

Cask at the Free Press, Cambridge. Tawny brown, clear with a small amount of clumpy white head. Caramel, orange peel and some spice in the aroma. Bittersweet taste with a bitter-sour bite at the end. Chalky texture. It’s not bad actually but fails to get me all that excited.

Pint on Tap at Travellers Call, Stockport. Slight hop/acidic nose. Amber beer with small white head. Thin body with slight bitterness. Finish is standard ’Robinson’s’- bitter followed by citric/vinegar aftertaste. Not bad.

Smooth and mild beginning, fresh, malty and smooth. Not too deep, but easy to drink with earthy hints. The aftertaste is slightly bitter, fresh-malty, earthy. Nice!!

Cask at Christian Firtal. Golden with a small white head. Malty aroma with a fruity hint, and an almond note. Sweetish malty and fruity flavour with mild, grassy hops in the finish.

Cask@Charlies, Copenhagen (22/06/2914) - amber pour medium white head. Aroma and taste is light toasty malty, caramel, slight citrus fruity and floral, pretty watery body.

Castle Hotel, Manchester 21 Jan 13. Mørk gylden. Uklar. Lavt skum som varer. Teppelacing. Bra fruktaroma. Smaken er syrlig frukt. Litt tung fruktig ettersmak.

Cask at The Black Horse, Preston. Amber with a good white head. Faint aromas, but caramel and floral hops are there. Taste is a bit on the thin side, more malt coming through than anything. Slight bitterness towards the end. OK.

Pint at The Bridge End, Llangollen. Easy drinking but generally rather thin and unadventurous beer. A whisp of citrus hides behind the malts and hops but not really enough for this to stand out.

Cask at the Rose and Thistle, Frimley Green - 05/01/13. Clear dark amber/golden with no head - looks lifeless and uninviting. Nose is thin and subdued, light malts, touch of fruit. Taste comprises malts, apples, berry fruit, light sugars. Medium bodied with some bitterness in the finish. Distinctly below average and dull.
