What happens when you take the Holy Grail for hopheads and age it in Utopias barrels? Magic.

In our latest iteration of 120 Minute IPA, we’ve enlisted the mystique that is Samuel Adams Utopias barrels to create an experience that’s both familiar and new with every sip you take.

Continuously hopped with a copious amount of high-alpha American hops throughout the boil and then dry-hopped with even more hops for an unfiltered and abundantly hoppy brew, 120 Minute was then aged in freshly emptied Utopias barrels. The resulting deep copper-colored beer is bursting with sweet, almost candy-like aromas of citrus and pine, complemented by hoppy, resiny flavors and a lingering bitterness.

32oz crowler at a share. Huge. Pine and honey and booze. Spicy. Wow. This much beer is enough to get a party drunk. Sticky too. 6 3 6 3 11

2023 bottle from Livonia Liquor. Pours a chestnut brown with a half finger of beige head that dissipates quickly. Honey, almond, fig and prune aromas on the nose. More of the same on the palate with an almost port-like flavor. More fig, prune and raisin on the finish with some zesty, peppery hops to balance things out. Dangerously drinkable for the ABV.

12oz bottle from Total Wines & More, Laguna Hills. It's my night cap on 15th July 2023. Drank at my daughters place. What a cracking beer, proper 'sit by the fire and sip' sort of brew. Deep golden body, thin white head, looked lame, but it came alive as soon as I had a sniff and taste. Hopsville, Arizona isn't a place, but if it was this beer would come from there! Loved it. Still never had the regular 120 Minute, but this is just great.

Panda, courtesy of SHIG, pours with a crystal clear deep gold colored body that has copper hues and really no head at all. The aroma offers up loads of booze induced sweet smelling reduced sugars, a sludgy cloud of sweet reduced malts, a touch of vanilla and then more booze. The taste delivers sweet slick thick malt sweetness and molasses infused brown sugar. To midway mildly heavy levels of sweet honey drenched citrus hop candy can be noticed upon deep focus. Toward the finish the sweetness becomes more balanced by a modest boozy burn that later warms into the after taste. Fun sipper.

Caramel, plum, volatile nose. Clear copper, headless. Crazy sweet, caramel, fruitcake. Medium body, soft carbonation, hot. Sticky, boozy. Utopias shows in the aroma, but the palate is all 120.

Amber red pour. Thin foam. Brandy and caramel nose. Smooth drinking sweet fruitcake with vanilla and caramel palate. Delicious without a lot of carbonation

31st May 2023Panda, huge thanks to Theydon Bois who knew this would float my boat. Almost clear amber beer, short bubbly pale cream colour head. Palate is pretty light for the 17% and has decent fine carbonation. The malts come through as slightly thin for sucj a hefty brew, a mild creamy sweetness. The Utopias barrel is immediately obvious, savoury wood, a little oaky vanilla and a complex spirit profile that is not easy to pull apart, brandy and bourbon in there, perhaps a trace of red wine, more lurking behind. Ripe citric hops blend in well, some peel bitterness with a touch of brighter citrus on the semi dry finish. A mildly bitter and multo faceted linger. Drinks like 7%, no heat here I can discern. A complex and very easy drinking very big beer. Quite marvellous really!

Pours deep mahogany into a snifter. White head with little retention recedes to mottle surface. Hot sweet brandy and sherry aromas. Slick with sweet caramel, treacle and warm, lasting brandy soaked dried pit fruit front to back. This one grew on me and I enjoyed it more than the original - more Utopias than 120 minute.

Bottle from the Packie. Brilliantly clear deep copper with a bubbly off white head that persists. Rich fruity port notes with a sweet sticky bready caramel maltiness. Clear alcohol notes on the nose but not as evident in the flavor. Great sipper, but I'm also glad someone shared it with me!
