We firmly believe that one particularly good beer is better than a bucketful of seasonals. So, although it may be a bit cheeky, we have one winter ale that forms the basis of our seasonal range.
This delicious 5% beer is dark ruby in colour and has a well balanced flavour with a bittersweet chocolate edge. This comes from the careful use of Fuggles and Challenger hops.

Cask at The Playhouse, Colchester. Poured a clear dark amber with a bubbly white head. The aroma is red berry fruit and malt. The flavour is medium bitter with a hop bitter weak malt palate. Medium bodied with flat carbonation. A nice fruitfy malt bitter Christmas ale, but far from the best.

Pint in the Goodmas Fields Spoons. Clear dark amber - brown beer. Smooth palate with a little carbonation. Seems to be in good condition! Smooth rich malt for an ESB, robust but never roasty or bitter. A little cream. Well balanced mild orangey hops. Finishes smooth. Satisfying and drinkable - a decent ESB.

Cask at the Crosse Keys, JDW, London. Pours clear, shiny copper with a weak, foamy head. Aroma holds some almost smokey, toasty malts and subtle dark fruits. Nice flavor, with some meaty, salty but underweighted smokiness, slight jam, biscuits. Medium bodied with fine carbonation. Sweet, medium duration smokey finish, with rich bread, subtle leaves and grass. Interesting and enjoyable.

Cask-conditioned at the Rising Sun, Frampton Cotterell, S Gloucs 3/5/08. This was called "St George’s Ale" but, according to the brewery’s website, all its seasonal ales are rebadges of the same base beer. Deep reddish-brown in colour with next to no head and an aroma of toffee and red fruit. The flavour was sweet too, with plenty of malt and some earthy hops in the finish. Good.

(Cask at Market Porter, Southwark, London, 2 Dec 2007) Dark reddish brown colour with frothy, beige head. Malty nose with dried fruit, raisins and hints of freshly ground coffee. Malty taste with notes of dark fruit, raisins, prunes and fruit cake resting on a solid malt foundation. Slightly sweet with balanced bitterness. Nice winter ale.

Bottled. A dark amber beer with a thin tan head. The aroma is sweet with strong notes of over ripe fruits, more like a Barley Wine, than a Premium Bitter. The flavor is sweet with notes of over ripe fruit, malt, and prunes, leading to a slightly bitter finish. The body is thin.
