We firmly believe that one particularly good beer is better than a bucketful of seasonals. So, although it may be a bit cheeky, we have one winter ale that forms the basis of our seasonal range.
This delicious 5% beer is dark ruby in colour and has a well balanced flavour with a bittersweet chocolate edge. This comes from the careful use of Fuggles and Challenger hops.

Bottle, at Cardinal. Clear, copper body, with a nice, beige head leaving lacings. The aroma has some dried fruits, roasted, hops and a little spicy touch. Dried fruits, mostly raisins, and roasted malt in the flavor as well. It could use a bit more body. The finish is spiced, with dried fruits. A quite nice winter beer. (070623)

(Bottle 50 cl) Clear, orangey brown - no head at all. Weak aroma of roasted malt. Light and slightly watery body - completely flat - with sweetish, roasted malts and a hint of nuts. Very subdued bitterness. 120507

Thin white head. Red body with carbonation. Dense sweetish malt and cinnamon aroma with notes of roastiness, and perhaps a touch of smoke. Nice dry roasty caramel aftertaste. Good, but could have been denser and had more taste. (0.5l bottle.)

500 ml brown bottle, Christmas 2006, as Otter Claus, courtesy of Cardinal pub, Stavanger. ABV is 5.0%. Reddish amber colour, moderate head. OK but moderate aroma of bakery and earthy hops. Flavour is nicely balanced between the malts and hops, and makes this a very drinkable premium bitter, but there is nothing that really "stands out" and makes the beer "something special" for Christmas. Might as well be an all-year beer. Okay, but is probably better from a well kept cask.

Cask conditioned at Ye Olde Dolphin Inne, Derby, as Otter MacOtter (Heavyweight Beer Festival, February 2005). Gravity dispense. Brown to ruby colour, some natural carbonation, no head. Malty aroma and flavour like expected from a "Scottish" style ale, but this one also has a tolerable hoppy bitterness. Hints of dark bitter chocolate. Not a bad try from the Otter Brewery.

500ml Bottle from Sainsburyโs Nov 05, reddish brown with small white head, some maltiness and dried fruits and chocolate tastes kicking around in there, pretty good beer but could have been so much better.

500ml bottle from Sainsburys. Chestnut colour with thin beige head Nice choc malts and some raisin fruit. Roasted griny malt flavour and texture in mouth with more choc/coffee andraisins and heavy hops on end giving it balance and dryness. Could do with being a live beer
