Thin white coarse head. Deep dark brown body. Sharpish licorice, nuts, and metal aroma with sweetish wooden plum notes. Deep sweet wooden licorice taste with dry nutty aftertaste. Traces of smoke. Quite good, but not a sensation. (0.5l bottle.)

500 ml brown bottle, courtesy of Cardinal pub, Stavanger. "Conditioned in the bottle". ABV is 6%. Copper coloured, slightly hazy. Moderate beige head. Very nice aroma, vinous notes, also notes of rum-drenched raisins, oak and Christmas pudding. Rich flavour with substantial malts, hints of Christmas pudding, caramel, spices, oak and port wine. Decent hops dominate the finish and the bitter aftertaste. A very nice Christmas ale!

Bottle, Sainsburys, Kidlington, available as part of a presentation pack that also includes Otter Claus and another that I’ve forgotten. Dark brown colour with a malty and sweet aroma some burnt sugar perhaps? Taste is also a bit sweet with fruits and malts, this is fine but nothing great.

(Bottle 50 cl) Very dark amber coming close to chestnut, very unclear with lots of impurities. Small light brown head.. Rather low in carbonation. Vinous, port-like nose and a surprising tartness that actually reminds me of Flemish sour ale. Very aromatic and complex with some late bitterness. 270104

Amber color; poor head. Caramel nose, spices, banana, raisins. Dry mouthfeel, with some caramel, but too poor.

Strong dark ale from South Shropshire with a smooth dark malt palate, with a touch of raisiny fruitcake and port wine. Very complex. Dabosk's sample sounds like it was infected, as does Silk Tork's. Ignore that crap and enjoy a wonderful beer.
