To celebrate the success of Garún Nr. 19, the highest rated Icelandic beer on Untappd.com, BeerAdvocate.com and RateBeer.com (where it scores a whopping 98/100), we decided to give it the royal treatment and age it in cognac casks for 10 months. Garún Garún is freeze distilled, and the aging process awakens heady tones of oak and vanilla in addition to the intensely rich palate of chocolate, licorice and coffee.

Garún is named for the heroine of one of Iceland’s most popular folktales, The Deacon of Dark River. A tale of ghosts and undying love.

Bottle through private import. Thanks to Phil. Chocolate aromas flavored with strong alcohol with fruity esters like cherries, prunes and raisins. Subtle notes of nougat, anise, molasses and caramel. Black and opaque liquid, without foam collar, leaving superb legs on the glass. Chocolate mouth entry with molasses accents, ending in an explosion of strong alcohol reminding cognac. The bitterness is intended to be earthy and roasted but is totally dominated by alcohol that persists trough finish. The body is at its maximum, well rounded, and its texture a little syrupy. Despite its exaggerated alcohol content, it remains quite complex. But it would be even more without. O:7.775 V:4.5 G:8.15 B:3.65 G:15.4 T:39.475

Bottle: Poured a pitch-black color stout with a small dark brown foamy head with OK retention and light lacing. Aroma of warming alcohol notes and black chocolate with light residual sugar notes. Taste is dominated by strong alcohol notes with some fusel notes and black chocolate with some alcohol notes also perceptible. Body is full with oily texture with medium carbonation and strong alcohol notes are perceptible. Too much perceptible alcohol for it’s own good and lacks balance overall.
