11 June 2024. At Fierce Beer, Edinburgh. Shared with the lovely Anke!
A: hazy black, stable, foamy, beige head.
A: black olive, mushroom, earth, old walnut.
T: sweetish fig, umami mushroom; toast, earth.
F: earthy hops, toast, umami mushroom.
P: medium body, slick-creamy texture, soft carbonation.
Tasty and very 'dark' in character, but lacks fruitiness.

Black IPA resulting from the collaboration of two British breweries; thanks to Hinke for sharing! Medium thick, regular, greyish off-white, breaking head on a hazy very dark chocolate brown robe, blackish but not quite. Aroma of bitter chocolate, burnt toast, nutmeg, dry caramel, ferrous spring water, coffee grounds, dry earth, dried thyme, black pepper, pecan, touch peppermint in the background. Dryish onset, some dried prune, medium carb with smooth, oily body; bitter chocolatey, toasted-nutty core with a softening toffeeish edge, quickly overshadowed by a weedy, peppery hop bitterness, a tad powdery, with notes of thyme and wormwood – yet remaining a bit understated in hop aromas and unable to fully take over that toasty malt bitterness. As with all too many Euro BIPAs, the fact that this genre arose in the midst of the upcoming U.S. craft beer revolution and therefore begs for New World hops in a much more fragrant way has been overlooked (in spite of the American varieties used), resulting in what is basically a hoppy porter. I am still longing for a black IPA with a wave of American hop aromas to remind me that it is, actually, still a form of IPA I am drinking – which is exactly what is lacking here, technically solid as this brew may be.

440ml can. Pours black with a large tan head. Aroma of chocolate, roast malts, orange peel, pine. Taste of dark chocolate, coffee and roasty malts, orange, pine, citrus peel, a bit fruity, liquorice, bitter finish. Medium bodied. A rather good BIPA which was expected with Elusive on board.

440ml can bought as part of a delivery from Elusive brewery and drunk at home. Pours very dark brown with a large smooth khaki head. Spicy, piney aroma, lots of roasted malt, perhaps notes of grapefruit, smoke and coffee grounds in the background. Sweet taste, nicely smooth with a touch of fruity bitterness at the finish. Lots more pine here, a little more coffee. Light-is body with medium to heavy carbonation. Absolutely delightful!

Can from Fierce Edinburgh. Appearance - dark brown to mat black. Beige, creamy head. Nose - toffee, caramel and malt loaf. Taste - malt loaf, toffee and burnt toast. Some orange or lime lurking. Palate - medium bodied at least, chewy middle and roasty finish. Overall - this is a hoppy stout, it doesn't quite hit style which is pretty precise.
