A full palette of malts paints a picture lush with Chocolate and coffee. Sweet and bitter, malty and hoppy, a true Salopian.

Pendle Beer Festival 2026 Beer#1. A dark starter for the festival, which is a steady if understated stout, dark malty rather than roasted in its notes, and an underperforming texture.

Cask at the Wellington, Birmingham. Poured almost black in colour with a mostly lasting frothy, off-white head. The aroma is roasty, light chocolate. The flavour is moderate to light liquorice bitter, light sweet, with a smooth, somewhat light, chocolate, earthy, light herbal, aromatic, liquorice bitter palate. Medium to light bodied with soft carbonation.

Hand-pulled half-pint at the Boot on 24th March 2024. Black bodied, beige top. Aroma and taste is all about the malts, roasted/toasted and slightly singed, giving chocolate and coffee flavours throughout. Nice sipper.

Keg draught at the Ale Wagon, Leicester. Very dark brown, opaque with a small tight beige/khaki head. Big roast malt aroma, with intense coffee grounds character. Taste is gorgeous, just sweet enough with some yeasty umami and flowed up with light hoppy bitterness. Thick body and just enough carbonation to lift it. This is Salopian at their best.

Near black with a frothy tan head and milk chocolate and mild coffee on the nose. Smooth with chocolate and malt up front, coffee bitterness and a dry finish

Cask at Three Fishes, Shrewsbury. Pours almost black with a small foamy tan head and excellent lacing. The aroma is roasted malts plus good helpings of chocolate and a little vanilla. In the mouth it is sweet and fruity with roasted malts and chocolate coming through strongly. Later on there is some ash and hints of cola, ginger and fruity wine gums leading to a dry and slightly bitter finish. Simply sublime – one of my all time favourite Salopian beers.

Cask pint @ Three Fishes. Pours dark with a large tan collar. Aroma of roasted malt and coffee roast with some chocolate shades. Full bodied with big chocolatey character and a strong roasty side, nicely hoppy with what appears to be pine in the shadows. Excellent big stout. Why can't more breweries produce stuff like this??
