The roots of ‘Audit Ale’ can be traced back to at least the fourteenth century. Our archives show Lacons Audit ale was enjoyed by a number of Cambridge and Oxford University colleges to celebrate the end of their annual audits. By popular demand this ale was exported to the USA in champagne style bottles from 1937.

This strong dark copper barley wine has a prominent flavour of berry fruit, laced with pronounced spice. The finish is warming, smooth and sweet. A unique style of beer with ‘hop wine’ overtones.

750ml swing top job. Brewed June 2019. Picked up at Bakers and Larners of Holt, Norfolk. I can’t imagine where these Heritage beers are stored because the condition is stunning every time. Opens without a pop but pours lively. Sits lightly hazed pale copper. Beautiful slim super sticky semi lacing white foam. Nose has soft oxidised notes under date and fig fruit. Overripe citrus. Bit of a mega sweet sliced pear thing. Taste has a moderate fruity sweetness with robust bitterness throughout. Slick and a tad chewy. Nice bitterness at the finish tempers things well. Bosh.

Third by cask, third day of GBBF Winter 20, Iron Bridge Bar. Shared with Finn. Clear amber-brown body, naked at the top, poor lacing. Stewed fruity nose, vinous. Dried fruits and berries to the taste buds, jam-like impression. Warming marmalade finish. Smooth. Sipper qualities, overly sweet in the long run. (Birmingham 06.02.2020).

Fra cask på GBBF aug-19: klar kobbergylden med fint skum som varer. Vinøse toner med tørkede frukter, appelsinmarmelade og en tydelig humlebitterhed. Very enjoyable indeed.

Cask at GBBF 2019. Rich herby fruit aroma. Crystal amber. Thick light beige head. Medium bitter. Dark fruity sweet streak. Light-medium bodied. Slick. Average carbonation. Long astringent finish. Overly bitter for the style in my opinion. Not overly enjoyable. A pity as it looks and smells good.
