Our 2019 Rolling Thunder Imperial Stout was aged for 9 months in handmade Rolling Thunder Barrel Works barrels previously used to age our Dead Guy Whiskey. This one-of-a-kind imperial stout can be enjoyed right away or cellared for years. Either way it's best shared among friends.
We skipped the fruit this year to let the stout and whiskey barrel shine. Rich, viscous notes of chocolate and coffee combine flawlessly with flavors of whiskey-soaked Oregon oak.

Feel like cracking a BA stout from the cellar tonight. Pours brownish-black with a transitory brown head. Slight "bourbon and branch" watery nose. Taste has a start of coffee, then some dryness mixed with whiskey. Can't get much of the actual whiskey barrel, but there is a bit of harshness from oak. Mouthfeel is notably lighter than, say, a Bourbon County.

Pours black with a tan head. Aroma has notes of roasted malt, chocolate, alcohol and caramel. Taste is medium to heavy sweet and light bitter with a long warm, chocolate and caramel finish. Body is full, texture is oily, carbonation is soft.

Super deep dark brown coloured body with a very thick, four to five centimetre tall rich brown heaad that stays afloat for a long time - actually looks quite nice. Aroma of anise, deep roasted malts, caramelised sugars, vanilla, bunches of chocolate and a ton of alcohol and bourbon notes that hit very hard. Full-bodied; Super strong rich chocolate, anise, licorice and especially alcohol/boozy notes that share a lot of flavours, but a ton of complexity and even more pungency and astringency, all with a bunch of sugars still - mainly lactose and caramelised sugars. Aftertaste is rich, very robust and full of bourbon and strong alcohol notes with the anise and licorice very strong throughout and some lactose and super roasted/burnt malt shows through everything. Overall, a very strong and incredibly pungent imperial stout with a lot of deep boozy notes, quite a bit of chocolate and caramelised sugars, but way more lactose, anise and licorice notes than anything else - pungent throughout and perhaps could be a good beer in a few years time, but now it's too raw on the edges and pungent. Good to try, at least, and while I wasn't going to bring this bottle back in my suitcase, it does need a few years to settle in the bottle. I sampled this 50 cL bottle in box, purchased from Smith's Liqour Gallery in Rapid City, South Dakota on 25-June-2020 for US$13,59 sampled in my hotel room here in Sundance, Wyoming a day later on 26-June-2020. This bottle was almost the last of the run, as Barrel #31 of #31 and Bottle #357 of #413.

Bottle, 12.8% at Beershoppen. Weak vinous aroma, sweet liquorice. Black colour. No head. The flavour has a little marshmallow to begin with, turning roasted with a good coffee bitterness. Quite syrupy.

Bottle (barrel 6 of 31, bottle 367 of 413). Pitch black with a tiny off white head. Fairly subtle aroma, raisins, toasty notes, tannins from the wood, alcohol. Chocolate notes, nutty, tannins, alcohol, ending nicely roasty, bitterish and slightly lean. A very good BA RIS, not spectacular, but does its job well.

Bottle. A dark brown to black beer with a minimal sized beige head. Roasted malts, coffee, some dark dried fruits, alcohol and a touch of cellar in the aroma. It's full bodied, warming, soft and smooth with flavors of roasted malts, coffee, cocoa, alcohol and a light spiced, herbal hint. Lasting finish. Intense but nice. 190913
