Cask at Crewe Dog, Crewe. Pours a dark reddish-brown with a small foamy tan head and good lacing. The aroma is mainly malts and alcohol but with some hints of spicy and chocolate also. In the mouth it is basically sweet and remains so, but with a hint of underlying bitterness. Flavour is roasted malts, alcoholic strength, liquorice and chocolate with hints of coffee, spice and treacle coming later. Finish is slightly dry and quite boozy. This is decent.

Hand-pulled half-pint in Skipton on 19th November 2021. Tan head on a near black body, looked good. Malty with a leather and liquorice twist in both the aroma and taste, dark chocolate arrives late in the brew.

The taste is dry, chewy, rich roasted malt, liquorice, umami, charred wood, bitter chocolate, peppery spice, warming alcohol, tannin, charcoal and burnt toffee with a slick, roasted finihs. Keg @ Trades Club, Hebden Bridge. Extremely dark red with a thin bubbly-creamy head. Strong tasting with a gritty roasted malt taste, and a steady aroma in this respect. It’s crisp out of the keg.

Bottle from Blacker Hall Farm Shop. Dark red. Thin, tan head. Aroma is an odd, greasy, fruitiness. Taste is a dry roastiness. Quite tart. Fairly harsh, bitter aftertaste. No trace of sediment in the bottle. Tastes a bit sterile. Disappointing.

Bottle from the Chesham Brewery Store. Poured a very dark ruby with a thin, but dense tan head and good lacing. Aroma of dark chocolate, OXO and molasses. Full bodied stout. Flavours of caramel, roast malt and dark fruit. Lingering liquorice, coffee and bitter burnt malt.
