A strong dark mild with deep complex notes of roasted coffee, chocolate & mocha, balanced by hints of dark cherry and blackcurrant. The Burnley brewer’s link with Halloween is well established – largely due to their award-winning brews with names centred around the story of the witches of Pendle Hill (aka Pendle Witches) near Burnley in Lancashire.

Sweet and fruity aroma, blackcurrants perhaps. Also dark roasted malts. A really full flavoured beer where the richness and fruitiness offset the bitter, roasted malt.

Bree Louise. Cask. Almost opaque dark brown beer. No head. Smooth palate, light and semi dry. Very modest fine carbonation. Smooth and mild dark malts deliver a pleasant dark chocolate. Touch of dark fruits underneath. Whisper of violets. Smooth semi dry finish. Pretty drinkable.

Cask @ Old Gate, Hebden Bridge. At a meet the brewer session, the beer was paid for by Moorhouses themselves which was a very pleasant surprise. Lots of background to this beer which is too long to type, but suffice to say it’s very limited edition with the 4.6% more prevalent. Practically black with a frothy head. Not overly stated in its style as you might expect it to be, although the strength probably accounts for this, however the strength is not really evident and it’s fairly light textured and tasting in the palate.

Gravity cask at the Bree Louise - London. Pours brown-black with minimal head. Nice dark malt aroma with notes of dried dark fruits, cocoa, burnt wood. Medium sweet flavor with notes of toasted cereal, milk chocolate, dried fruits. Medium bodied with soft carbonation and oily mouthfeel. Lightly warming on the finish with further notes of chocolate, very mellow roasted malts, slight earth, alcohol, raisins and other dried dark fruits. Very tasty stuff.
