Mild as a beer style is one of the oldest in the British brewing tradition. As its name suggests, Mild is mild in terms of alcohol and hop bitterness, the superb flavours of this style of beer are driven by the use of top-quality crystal and roasted barleys. Theakston Mild is almost certainly one of the original two or three beers brewed by Robert Theakston when he first started brewing in Masham in 1827. As a beer style Mild was very popular in Britain before the last war but since then has been over-shadowed by the growth in popularity of lighter ales and lagers. The malty flavour of Mild makes the ale an ideal accompaniment to sandwiches and ploughman lunches.

Drank in the British Legion Club, Dawley in Nov 2006. This keg version was jet black in colour and had a firm white head which stayed to the end of the pint. The aroma was of caramel and burnt malt, with undertones of chocolate. The taste was also of burnt malt, caramel and chocolate, but with the added strange hint of mushrooms somewhere in the flavour. Add to that a sweet overtone, which tries to mask out the other flavours and you end up with a strange but not unpleasant taste. The taste stayed a while in the mouth and overall, it was OK.

Keg at the Gainsborough Hotel, Kidderminster. Pours very dark brown with a medium head. Aroma has mild coffee and dark fruity notes. Taste is a little bland, watery coffee and some roasty hints. Served far too cold.

Cask at Our Mutual Friend, Stevenage, described as Theakston Dark Mild. Deep chestnut with a tight beige head; nutty aroma; thin but with powerful earthy and nutty malts, becoming slightly sweeter, then some light hops before a bready finish. A full bodied mild.
