This new collaboration with our friends at The Veil (Richmond, VA) is a bold and intense barrel-aged barleywine. Full bodied with a light warming character, Drove of Oxen showcases complex aromas of brulee sugar, black cherry, and bourbon with a medium-high sweetness and a light bitterness.

500 ml bottle. Aroma is vanilla, cake batter, sticky caramel. Gosh damn. That is sweet. Sticky toffee, vanilla, and maybe a weak hint if bourbon. I Hope for some acid and something just a little off here. Too much sweetness.

Bottle drunk 5/3/25.
Clear, dark. Small, tan head.
Really interesting wow! Fudge, vanilla, bourbon I guess, with good mellowness and sticky caramel. That's a lot of vanilla but it's rich and lovely.
Good acidity with lots of long caramel and plentiful acidity. Salted caramel with a medium-light body. Hmmm, this smells a lot better than it tastes. Kind of oxidized with raisin and so much weird acidity. I don't hate a nice acidity but it's a bit leaden with a bit punchy acidity.

Bottle at Benny’s place, Kuala Lumpur. Poured a clear dark brown colour with no life at all. The flavour is warm boozy sweet, with a big, rich, oily, molasses, tart cherry, big alcohol bitter palate. Full bodied with flat carbonation.

Panda at home, thanks to Kenneth of Essex, 23/10/24. Extremely dark mahogany brown approaching black and topped with a khaki cap that thins to a swirl. Nose is dried fruit esters, mellow rum, toffee, molasses, toasted brown sugars. Taste comprises dates, figs, savoury notes, molasses, spice, rum barrel, fruit cake mix, brown sugar dusting. Full bodied, light oily feel, semi drying close with a balanced rising boost. Solid 'Lif' ... good bitter sweet / savoury balance.

12th October 2024 Almost clear dark brown beer, small bubbly tan head. Smooth palate, slightly viscous, decent fine carbonation. Smooth malts, some dark toffee but the dominant flavour is an umami marmite / soy thing. Rum barrel? Certainly some oaky vanilla, rich ripe fruits, tastes like bourbon barrel as much as rum barrell, more sherry than rum as well. Modest spice on the smooth and slightly viscous finish. It's rich and tasty but I feel slightly let down, it's not quite the malt complex sumptuous treat I was expecting/hoping for.
