Bottle. Dark brown body with a small beige head. Faint lacing. Aroma of black cherry, prunes, cocoa powder, teriyaki sauce and beef jerky. Flavour of wood, sweet blackcurrants and liquorice. Medium to full body with a syrupy texture. Light fizz. A really unusual beer - I loved it.

On tap at the Hillgrove Porter Stores, Bristol 12/2/2016. Dark brown in colour, with a thin, off-white, head. Aroma of brown sugar, toasty malts, berry fruits and citrus hops. Full mouthfeel, with flavours of liquorice, dark toffee, redcurrants and oak. Finish was surprisingly smooth for such a strong beer, with a hoppy edge. Very good.

Bottle from Beer Gonzo webshop, consumed at home Thursday 11th February 2016 Absolutely glorious, in fact one of the best from Hopcraft and Steel City. Hoppy at first but with a nice background that displays dark fruit, liquorice and a bit of chocolate, it is not your usual Barley Wine but hey with these three breweries at the controls it never was going to be was it. Warming with dark sugars and some bitter treacle, lovely looks good but can’t be arsed to describe the look when it tastes this good. A8 A4 T8 P4 Ov17 4.1

Opaque dark brown beer, thin pale tan head. Palate is airy and semi dry. Decent fine carbonation. Mellow dark malts, quite woody, some wet wood as well. Spicy licorice. A little hop spice in there maybe. The licorice gets savoury. Light finish. A satisfyingly savoury barleywine and the bottle slipped down easy.

Keg tap at the Rutland Arms, Sheffield. Darkest black with possible hints of purple. Big tan head. Spruce and pine in the aroma, with blueberries and dark chocolate. The sugary sweetness of the initial sip is quickly supplanted by a firm but by no means excessive hop bitterness. Long bitter finish that leaves traces of stone fruit, liquorice and resin in the aftertaste. Nothing short of magical.

Cask. Sheffield Tap. As Arbor / Hopcraft / Steel City Argy Bargy. Nearly black. Light tan head. Rich, thick, full nose of treacle. Liquorice. Bonfire toffee. Fruity malts. Boozy fruits. Taste sets off fruity, chewy sweet, and then gets more bitter. Light, fruity tang. Full mouthfeel. Touch of warmth. Lip coating sweetness and nicely balanced bitterness on the finish. Big beer that I flopped in no time.
