A light, easy-drinking beer without compromising flavour. Backyard has all the characteristics that you want out of an IPA; like hints of juicy citrus and dank hoppy nose. The beauty of this beer though? It's only 3.7% ABV.

Tap at Frisches Bier. Hazy golden, offwhite lacing. Herbal, leafy, light papery, earthy, light citrus, cardboard finish. Bit too much Kulminator flavors.

From the bottle. Hazy orange with a frothy white crown. Citrus, peach and caramel in the aroma. Taste trends sweet at the very outset with hints of butterscotch and toffee, soon overtaken though by a dry herbal but also slightly metallic bitterness. Finishes the same, but the sweetness in the undertone lingers afterwards. Body is medium, carbonation mild. Overall pretty good.

Bottle from Beers of Europe. Poured a hazy light amber with a thin broken white head. The aroma is malt, light toffee caramel, light fruit, floral hop. The flavour is moderate to strong bitter with a crisp, woody, resin hop bitter palate and a long bitter finish. Medium bodied with average carbonation.

Bottle. A- Grassy, straw, bread dough, cheese, caramel. A- Golden orange color, clear liquid, white head. T- Grassy, dough, mild cheese, caramel. P- Medium body, average texture, average carbonation, bland finish. O- Not bad. Considering Founders is only 40 miles away and making one of the best session ipas in the country, Saugatuck has to make a decent session if they expect it to survive. This was fairly grassy and straw like. A touch of cheese in the aroma and palate as well. Certainly not very hoppy or bitter. Almost like a pale lager/pale ale hybrid per say.

Cloudy golden and lightly copper coloured body with a large, super soapy three centimetre tall tan head. Aroma of grassy and very dry and citrusey hop scents from this with some small malt noticeable in the nose as well. Light-bodied; Super pungent and funky soapy flavour at first with some very subdued hops, a little earth and a lot of off-flavours, mostly from cleanser, citrus, soap, grain and cardboardie and funky flavours of malt substitutes. Aftertaste is dry, funky, floral, grassy and super light - hops are noticeable, but the malt largely isn’t, which perhaps is a good thing in this one. Mild with some citrus, light grass and little else at the tail end. Overall, a decent Light IPA at best, that is missing a lot of character throughout and doesn’t show too well at any stage of the sample. Not really worth searching out for, as this is pretty subpar to most in the style, especially those from the great state of Michigan. I sampled this twelve ounce bottle purchased from Merchant’s in Dearborn, Michigan on 24-July-2015 for US$1,99 sampled at home on the Eastern Shore of Virginia on 14-January-2017.

bottle - Pours clear gold with a one finger white head. It smells of citrus hops and light caramel malt. The flavor is hop forward with crisp moderately strong bitterness, some citrus, and some malty sweetness. Light bodied. Pretty good.

Pour is a clear orange with a average white head. Aroma is a slight orange peel hop with a sweet caramel malt. Flavor is a decent fruit hop to start then it becomes thin and watery. The hops are probably a lot more noticable right after bottling so drinking this at peak freshness would have upped the score a bit. A bit to thin for me.
