Our "English Bitter" collaboration with Crooked Stave has a traditional malt base with high notes of English Challenger and Fuggle hops, but fermentation with twelve different strains of Brettanomyces quickly makes it something far from ordinary. Now All Bretts Are Off.

Tap at Cotteridge Wines. Poured a hazy medium amber with a frothy white head. The aroma is light yeast hop. The flavour is light bitter with a dry hoppy light floral light bretty palate. Light bodied with average carbonation.

Keg from Cotteridge Wines tasting rooms; clear amber pour with a thin beige head, slight sour and malt aroma, taste has dark fruits, light caramel, brett action.

On tap at Fyne Fest’, Achadunan, Cairndow, Argyll and Bute, Scotland, Saturday 13thJune 2015 Pours amber with a white head. Mmmhhh..a little rather dull beer from Siren, yeh’, it’s a bitter with some brett, I get that but it’s got very little going for it, touch fruity, malty with a caramel edge, and a little sourness on the nose. Ok but a tad dull. A6 A3 T6 P3 Ov12 3.0

Keg at Siren, 13th June 15. Pretty dull beer, not enough Brett to make it interesting, lacks flavour and complexity

Keg at CBC Holborn, 03/06/15. Lightly hazed orange golden with a moderate light beige covering. Nose is light wood, tarte fruit, faint diaper, bitter citric peel, brett light, hints of glue, apple core. Taste comprises ripe fruit, on the turn melon, spice, straw, light brett, faint menthol. Medium bodied, fine carbonation, semi drying close with light acidity. Ok approachable bretted sour, packs some flavour for 4.5% but lacks character for me.

On tap at the brewery. Golden amber with a tight cream head - looking like a traditional ESB - but with rather heavy carbonation; the aroma is sour, but not overly so - reminding me of grape must; in the mouth it’s well balanced, the sourness is there, but it’s quite subtle and is countered by some sweet caramel malts; the finish is clean and fresh. An interesting idea, but it’s not going to wow the sour drinkers, or appeal to a traditional bitter man.

Tap. Mother Kelly’s. Bethnal Green. Described as an English bitter. I get that. It’s malty. Light bitter. Bit vinous. My Dad would take it back, and possibly argue some kind of toss. I liked it. Pretty easy drinking.
