Dry and sharp with a subtle contribution that’s hard to place. Grassy, vanilla, and a touch medicinal. Nothing quite tastes like woodruff.

Once deeply routed in the cultural landscape of Brandenburg, Berlinerweisse is now invariably drunk mixed with a shot of shockingly sweet, vibrantly coloured, artificially flavoured woodruff syrup. We took the concept, replaced artificial with natural and ended up with a uniquely interesting snapshot of a lost Germanic tradition.

Bottle from Chez Sophie, Shrewsbury. Appearance - cloudy lemon brown. Nose - like real lemonade with a hint of shandy. Taste - tangy lemon barley water. Palate - light bodied with a tangy texture and a dry tangy finish. Overall - quite like this, despite it not being a style I usually go for.

Keg at mother kellys for the sour weekend. Translucent dark orange coloured pour with no head. Aroma is odd, woody, lemon, leathery, little oxidised grains, spicy. Flavour is composed of light tart, woody, grainy, bit of lemon, crisp and tart. Palate is light crisp with low carbonation. Goes down well. Nice lingering zippy lemon. Maybe a little oxidised.

Bottle. Curious Hop, Otley. Mucky gold. Lively, bubbly, ring of dirty white. Fairly lactic overall. Some earthy, straw notes. Dig deeper and there’s lemon rind. Some gentle spicy hop. Taste is crisp dry, and light sour. Clean, bone dry palate. Finishes earthy dry, and light tart.

Keg at CPK- London. Pours unclear, pale matte yellow with a creamy white head. Pleasant aroma with notes of zesty citrus, lemon, melon. Light sweet flavor with understated acidity, hints of cereal, lemon, tangerine, some mango, melon. Light bodied with average carbonation. Clean finish with further zesty citrus, nips of tropical fruits, some pale bread and cereal, mild citric bite. Solid effort.
