Last brewed by Younger’s of Edinburgh in 1841. This beer is similar to a Russian Imperial Stout due to the large amount of brown malt used.

Bottle. Pours opaque black, small brown head, dissipates fairly quickly, bubbly lacing. Aroma is hugely roasty, anise, molasses, heavy molasses, cocoa. Fully sweet, light plus bitter. Full body, creamy with low carbonation. Pretty interesting and intense beer.

Bottle. Appearance - opaque black with a lovely fawn coloured head. Nose - chocolate and raisins. Prunes. Taste - creamy but dark chocolate. Dried fruit, particularly raisins and dried orange peel. Dark treacle notes too. Palate - rich and full bodied with a creamy texture. The finish is still rich bit very balanced. Overall - a lovely imperial porter.

Leighton 10K tasting at Bruce’s pad. Almost opaque dark brown beer. Small pale tan head. Palate is smooth and light. Superfine carbonation. Tangy dark fruits, mild dark chocolate. Mild marmite underneath. Light bitterness. Light finish. Rich and tasty. Hides the abv well. 7.4

A 2013 bottle that suggests drinking now or in 10 years time. Well, I hope 13 years is okay. Near clear deep reddish brown beer that throws a good bubbly tan head. Smooth palate, a very mild viscosity, a very mild dryness, decent fine carbonation. Smooth and fairly sweet dark malts, soft dark malt cream, silky and luxuriant. Good dark chocolate but fairly well buried, comes through on the very end as does a soft earthy coffee. Mellow ripe fruits on the back end. Some caramelisation / oxidisation suits this brew rather well Soft finish. Stone the crows, this has aged superbly. Twas a struggle not to completely neck this.

Bottle thanks to myself. It pours black with a tiny tan head. The nose is rich, oily, creamy, chewy, cocoa, umami and blackberry. The taste is rich, earthy, blueberry, stewed fruits, warming alcohol, umami, wood, dirt, seaweed, salted liquorice with dry finish. Medium-full body and fine carbonation. Great depth, balance, interesting, tasty... Very nice.

Bottle shared in London - big thanks to Paul for this Scottish whale. Pours black-brown with a frothy, khaki head. The nose has burnt wood, dark chocolate, hits of dark bread. Medium sweet flavor with dry, leathery dark fruits, baking cocoa, raisins, faint salt. Full bodied, oily, with fine carbonation. Warming finish with sticky dark sugars, burnt wood, rich dark fruits, dark chocolate, baking cocoa. Delicious. Great depth, very well balanced. Yes, wonderful beer.
