Gravity cask at GBBF Session 1 - London. Pours lightly hazy brown with a light, creamy head. The nose holds Belgian yeast, dark bread and mild cocoa. Light to medium sweet with some dry chocolate, earth, Belgian yeast and toast. Medium bodied with fine carbonation. Lightly sweet to finish with mild astringency, further cocoa and Belgian yeast. So so.

Gravity dispense at GBBF ’13, 13/08/13. Murky dark mahogony brown with little in the way of a head. Nose carries notes of Belgian yeast, light smoke, tarte dark fruits. Taste comprises dark pitted fruit, grapefruit, yeast esters, grass, light spice. Medium bodied, fine carbonation, dry finish. Drinkable enough but nothing I’d choose to revisit.

GBBF Day 1. Cloudy brown beer. Small bubbly tan head, not particularly attractive. Palate is smooth with a little fine carbonation. Light hop spice. Reasonable pine. Thin malt base. Finishes smooth and dry with a mild spicy linger. Overall okay but certainly not a looker.

Cask gravity at GBBF 2013. It pours murky deep brown with a small bubbly head. The nose is toast, coffee, meaty aspect, earth, light spice and faint smoke. The taste is mellow roast, pine, varnish, light resin, spice, ash, coffee and light alcohol warmth with a very dry finish. Gets spicier towards the finish. Medium body and fine carbonation. Interesting and nice bitterness. Decent.

On tap at the source. Pours a solid black with a smallish tan head that persists forever. Aromas of light dark fruits, spicy Belgian yeasty esters and a hint of caramel. The hops really don’t come out in the aroma as advertised. The flavor is sweet fruity caramel malts with a heavy handed does of Belgian yeasty flavors. There is a spicy earthy hop flavor, but for my palette I have trouble enjoying them over the ever present yeasty phenols. Medium body and carbonation level with a sweet slick mouthfeel. Decent brew, but not exactly what I was expecting.

Draft @ Martha’s. Muddy river water color. The brewers deception (that wasn’t added here is spot on) Nose is light hops, malt with a presence of Belgian yeast. Taste is much the same and really the flavor is all over the place. However, this is what the brewer Greg intended, so it turned out exactly as he wanted. The Belgian yeast, hops and spice is an interesting blend. This gets points for creativity. It’s like a hoppy Belgian Dubbel. For sure worth a try.
