St. Bretta is our 100% Brettanomyces Whitebier that was just released this week! Not only is St. Bretta an evolution of Wild Wild Brett Orange, but also it will be ever-changing depending on the fresh citrus available that season. For our spring release we decided to brew St. Bretta with fresh Minneola Tangelo. Each seasonal release of St. Bretta will have a diverse range of citrus fruit added to keep the beer fresh and exciting (the summer release was brewed with blood oranges)!

Bottle thanks to Chow. Pours a cloudy yellow orange with small off white head that diminishes to nothing. The aroma is strong funk, oak, and citrus. Thin mouthfeel with nice tart citrus, light funk, sour finish. Very impressive.

Pours golden yellow and murky. On a darker beer, this cloudiness would seem ominous. Here, it just kinda looks more viscous than it actually is. The head is small, white and fades away pretty quickly. The aroma is big on citrus. No idea what they actually used, but it reminds me of limes, oranges and citron. Some vanilla, oak. Mild funk. Some grass. There’s an unexpected lactic note to it. The taste is fairly sour with a lot of citrus. More lactic than acetic, but the sourness is relatively strong, surprisingly so for an all brett beer. It’s all citrus peels, funk and yogurt with a splash of apple cider vinegar. Tasty and fairly refreshing. Fair bit of pucker. Some body to it. Carbonation isn’t very high, but it prickles on the tongue. It’s similar to Almanac Farmer’s Reserve #4. I quite like citrus sours, but I kinda think the citrus is hiding some messiness. That’s probably not fair. I’m just not sure how I would feel about this beer if the citrus and sour were dialed back.

Bottle from Capitol Beer in Sacramento, CA. Pours hazy light amber with no noticeable head. Aroma is musty citrus. Med body, or nearly. Flavor is instant sour, followed by definite sweatsox, with some grapey/mustiness. It’s mouth devouring sour, apparently based on citrus. Very nice drink!

Draft - Nice tart sweet citrus with Brett. Cloudy orange with no head. Lots of funk, tart and bitter with a sweet citrus in the background.

Hazy yellow, lots of lacto on the nose, light brett, quite tart with pithy bitterness, I’m guessing from the tangelo, relatively light body. Very refreshing, I could go back to this.

Draught at Falling Rock Tap Housein Denver, on April 9 2014.I only wrote down Crooked Stave St. Bretta, and on the online tap list for the Saison Night that wasn’t on there, taking a shot it was the spring version.Acidic, to sour taste. Cloudy apricot color, small white head. Fizzy mouthfeel, low bitterness. Funky aftertaste. Acidic, funky, stable scent.

Nose is light fart, earthy, lactic tang, orange peel, straw, lemon rind, apricot. Taste comprises floral notes, tarte grape skin, grass, orange pith, dank straw, light brett character. Medium bodied, fine carbonaion, dry grassy tarte notes in the finale. Sound.

Bottle thanks to Bruce. It pours lightly hazy gold with a small white head. The nose is musty, dank, barnyard, manure, sulphur, spice and fart. The taste is crisp, tart, lemon, grapefruit, sherbet, alka seltzer, some soap with a dry, citric finish. Medium body and fine, prickly carbonation. Smells a bit musty, but the taste makes up for it. As with the other version no great depth, but pretty tasty.

Bottle shared at Bruce’s in London - thanks to Bruce. Pours hazy yellow-gold with a wispy white cream head. Tangy citrus nose, notes of tangerine, lemon, tangy wheat. Light sweet flavor with sturdy yet understated tangy lemon, doughy wheat bread, some dry hay. Light bodied with average carbonation. Clean finish, fairly dry, with further lemony tang, slight straw bitterness, hints of lemon rind. Nice.
