Eye of the Hawk is an excellent, strong, rich bodied ale that is "Bottle Conditioned" to perfection. "Eye" is coppery reddish-amber in color and its unique taste is the result of a judicious mix of caramel and pale malted barley, balanced with Cluster, Cascade and Saaz hops. This gives the Eye its luxurious flavor, substantial mouth-feel and that slightly dry finish.

Pours a cloudy reddish color. Off-white head leaves some syrupy lacing. Sugary malts dominate aroma. The sweet malts are what you can taste at first, and then the slight amount of hop bitterness comes in after that. Then it leaves a sugary aftertaste in mouth. However, the mouth feel of this beer is merely ok. Nothing great, but, hey it was one of the cheaper six-packs with a good amount of alcohol, so I suppose it has good value.

Bottle. Pours a cloudy amber with a medium frothy light tan head that diminishes quickly leaving behind decent lacing along the glass. A lot of carbonation and bubbles. The aroma is a sweet fruity aroma with caramel. Thick mouthfeel with a strong hops with caramel malts in the finish. Hides the alcohol well making it easy to drink. A very good american strong ale from Mendocino.

Pours deep amber into a shaker. Head quickly recedes to skim surface and hug rim. Caramel aromas. Full with sweet caramel upfront. Lasting slight hop finish.

Bottle from Whole Foods Market Charlottesville. ABV listed as 8%. Copper pour with a small fizzy head. Caramel molasses aroma. Big caramel taste with a touch of hop bitterness and grain. A little too much on the sweet side.

Pours clear deep gold with copper core and weak head. The aroma is very sweet and flowery with floral hops. The taste begins with a rush of floral hop bitterness followed by roasted malts. It becomes increasingly sugar sweet midway where a load of late addition sweet floral hops flavor (presumably) adds to the sugary malts sweetness. I’m not sure I care for over the top floral and spice hopped beers. Taste is like an English IPA – American Strong Ale combo.

Bottle: Pours a cloudy orange with a large beige head, lots of lacing. Nose is floral and hoppy with a light citrus sweetness. Tastes floral, but disconnected. A bit soapy and malt didn’t balance. Maybe this was an old bottle? Dissapointment...

Hearty aroma of barley, roasted chestnuts, and salted meat. Unusually orange color with a thick, coating, yellow head. Extremely nutty, beginning to end, but it works well with the higher ABV. A touch of caramel, marshmallow, and french roast coffee adds more dimensions. Charred oak finish. Very good and one of a kind. It doesn’t strike me as the type of beer that pairs well with anything. Don’t try it with cheesecake, just so you know.

Bomber. Aroma of caramel and dark malt. Orange tinged amber color with a white head that quickly ringed. A bit thin bodied, with very mild carbonation. The flavor is mostly caramel malt, but there seems to be some grassy and grapefruit hops. It’s really enjoyable. The finish is lightly, malty sweet, yet rather dryish, and the hop is more citrus and floral than harsh bitter. Really good.

12 oz. bottle. Deep amber color, many strings of bubbles feeding a thin head. Strong malty and alcohol smell. Malty taste, too, like an amber malt liquor, but without all those alwful off tastes. Caramel taste. Strong without being heady. Quite sticky. Forced carbbonation is the only distraction; hope some day to catch it on draft.
