Cask at Cross Keys, Chester. Straw colour. Tight white head. I was thinking about what wasn’t quite right about this beer. I never did decide. Even after 4 pints of it ..

Hand-pulled pint in Ye Old Fighting Cocks, Oakengates on 29 Jun 2013. Very pale in looks, weak urine yellow in fact: good white bubbley head that tried to stay the distance, but failed. As you’d expect from a brew using Citra hops, this leaned heavily towards a citrus based flavour and aroma. I know this beer is very popular with a lot of Real Ale drinkers and craft beer fans alike, but I’m fed up with so may ’samey’ tasting brews using citrus flavours to refresh us Brits: I want deep amber brews with a malt and hop balance when I go into a pub, not this ’new wave’ of light lager look alikes with lemon duck toilet cleaner as a base! I’ve tried to score objectively.

500ml bottle from Ales By Mail
BBE 08/2013 - Pours golden orange with a large foamy head. Aroma of citrusy hops, lemon, grapefruit and grass. Taste is hoppy and mildly caramely with notes of tangy fruits, citrus, grass and grapefruit. Finish is bitter and slightly malty with some tangy notes. Okay, quite basic but tasty pale ale.

Cask at the Twickenham Beer Festival 2012. Straw with white head; the aroma is full of American hops; the body is quite thin, but the hops come through rather well, providing citrus and pine resin flavours; and a drying finish. More an APA than a Golden Ale in my opinion.

Gravity dispense at the twelfth Twickenham Beer Festival - 18/10/12. Hazy mid golden with a moderately sized frothy white head. Great hoppy nose with some sweet grapefruit, apricot jam and citrus tones. Caramel malt taste, orange, light grapefruit and hops. Medium bodied with a bitter finish. Great little hoppy number!

Cask at the Craft. Almost clear gold beer. Little white head. Light semi dry palate, a little fine carbonation. Mild pale malt with a tiny bit of cream supports good tangy orange hops - blood orange and a litytle tangerine. Finishes semi dry with mild bitter linger. Not had better than this from Blue Monkey. Great beer on a muggy evening.

500ml Bottle - Golden with a white head. Grapefruit, gooseberries, pineapple and mango all feature in the inviting aroma. Hoppy and fairly bitter taste with tangy grapefruit and tropical pineapple, mango and passion fruit all detected. Really nice.
