Belhaven Black Scottish Stout really is something completely different. Bursting with roast coffee and chocolate flavours, this is a truly genuine and premium pint.

Draught (nitro) @ Albion. Dark brown with reddish tint, small creamy beige head, no aroma at all, low carbonation, thin body, sweetish caramel taste, abrupt finish. Not a particularly impressive stout.

Re-rate Gravity cask at the Wig & Pen, Northampton. The roasted malts are much more prevalent, and there’s a distinct coffee taste. 3.5; avg rating 3.3-----------Cask at the Panton Arms, Cambridge. Black with a tiny bit of tan head. Liquorice and coffee in the aroma, followed by a surprising dollop of hoppy spruce. Bitter-sour taste, with a short bitter caramel finish. Thinnish mouthfeel. Ok.

Cask at the foot of the walk. Pours black, nose is sweet chocolate, taste is similar, better than the bottle.

Sampled @ GBBF day 3. Clear dark brown color, no head. Smell and taste are a bit flat and a bit faint, lightly roasty, lightly bitter, but something really annoying and not very nice in there. Don’t like it at all.

From cask. Pours clear and golden deep amber to brown with a small off white head. Aroma is roasted malty and breadish. Mild acidic and roasted dark malty. Citric and dry malty finish.

Cask. Deep ambery brown colour (not far from black) with a mediumized foamy off-white head, that leaves some lace as well. Flavour is toasted malts, mild ashy notes along with chocolate and coffee as well as some slight ripe fruitiness. Flavour is rather similar, but also has a nice bitterness towards the finish. Wellbalanced, and feels quite more bigger than just 4.2 %.

Cask handpump at The Jericho Tavern, Oxford, Saturday 23rd November 2013 Pours very dark brown in colour. A little cocoa on nose and then some cocoa combines with a some tangy fruit in mouth with a smoother milk chocolate finish. Not an awful lot to say about this beer but its ok. A6 A4 T6 P3 Ov12 3.1

On tap at Gbbf 2013. Black beer lasting thin beige head. It’s a half decent easy drinking stout. Some roast lacks a touch of condition. Some dark fruit. Ok

[Cask at the Hope Tap (JDW), Reading] Ruby-black with a small white head and a frothy mouthfeel. Chocolate, check. Coffee, check. Smoke, check. Plus a bit of blackcurrant thrown in for good measure. A classic, traditional light stout (verging on a mild) that is easy to drink and with a decent amount of flavour. Stout as a session ale. Nice one.
