They should be good men; their affairs as righteous: But all hoods make not monks. Beneath a deep blanket of snow there is a cereal grain that can survive the harsh winters and acidic soils - RYE. Like a draped hood over a monk, it is the righteousness inside that shines.

Location: I had this twice in the last couple months:
On Cask at Swift Hibernian Lounge, 4/24/10
Sampled at the NY Brewfest on Governor's Island, 6/19/10
Aroma: The nose has some rye to it, earth, caramel notes, some hoppy notes, citrus, spice, and grains
Appearance: This one pours a caramel color into the glass
Flavor: The taste is relatively dry, not too much sweetness, some earthy and grainy notes
Palate: A medium bodied beer, the mouthfeel is sort of cereal-like
Overall Impression: This is a pretty decent rye ale. A good feel to it, and it's pretty drinkable. It has that good cereal-like feel to it, which works pretty well with the flavors. I actually gave it a slightly higher score on tap then on cask, but both were fairly similar score-wise.

Tap at Hot Bird, Brooklyn ($6):Pours a hazy bronze color with a thin white head. Aroma of rye, some sugar, citrus fruits, and beautiful hops hops hops. Upon tasting it, there is are huge doses of hops and rye delivered straight to your face. A good amount of bitterness that culminates in a moderate aftertaste. Almost lemony at times. This is pretty much a slightly altered IPA with a whole bunch of rye in it, but that is most definitely a good thing.

On tap at Bridge View Tavern. Pours standard brown and is slightly hoppy with some spice and cirtus but not a whole lot going on. Enjoyable but forgettable

On draft at Quality Meats in NYC. Pours a hazy copper-orange color with a fluffy off-white head. The rye stands out against a nice malt balance, piney hops as well. Medium mouthfeel with the rye adding nice structure. Sweet malts/rye with a spike of bitterness that takes away from the overall beer. Very bitter on the finish. I would have liked it to be more balanced.

Cask at Rattle ’n Hum, New York
Amber color. Dusty caramel aroma with shades of hops. Smooth, with strong caramel flavor, light roasted malt and rye; the flavor as well is a bit dusty. There is some good hopping. The final, well bitter, gets a bit dry. Good.

A nice copper ale with a thin big bubbled off white head. In aroma, pleasant caramel malt with nice toffee notes, and a bit of sweet coffee. In mouth, a nice smooth malt with torrefied notes, very British hops, lingering metallic notes, medium bodied. Cask at Syracuse Real Ale Festival, Oct. 25 2009.

Pretty amber/brown pour with lasting head. Spicy, malty, caramel, some toasted malts, and floral hops. Full bodied, but still easy to drink. This was the perfect match for my burger at Stand in NYC. Wish I had ordered two!

On tap at Kettle, NYC. Pour is a cloudy amber with a normal off white head. Aroma is initially rye, then malt and finally hops. Taste is pretty much the same, in the same progression. Overall a nice beer.

Have had this twice on tap now. Once at Burp Castle and once at Jimmys. Poured into a pint glass with half inch head. Orange color, can see through the beer. Nothing distinct in the aroma. The body is light, watered down actually. No distinct flavors coming through. Nothing off-putting but nothing special either. Suprised its this strong, felt like a regular 5-6% brew. RERATE 5/7/06 - had on Tap at Liberty Heights Tao Room as a part of the Sixpoint tour (try it). This time the beer was very different, I do not know why. Translucent orange, but I couldn’t see through the beer. Aroma is moderatly floral and pot-like. Leaves a sweet aftertaste. I’m raising the score a bit.
