Another thanks go out to Matta for this fine beer! Pours a dark yellow color with a finely carbonated fluffy white head. Decent lace. Complex spicy aroma that invites one to linger over the aroma for a while. Good flavor which is somewhat different than the aroma had me prepared for. Good straight forward Belgian with citrus sweetness, yeasty complexity with spice, bread dough, and a smoky, peppery note. Alcohol is well hidden.

Aroma of a sweet tripel with fruit, yeast, wheat, and malt. Orange with a large and long lasting white head. Flavor is simple with sweet malt. I got a headache from the high alcohol content. Lacks complexity in the flavor that was present in the aroma. Rather Duvel-like.

Bottle. Haxy dark amber with a big off-white head. Aroma of tropical fruits, sweet malt and yeast. Sweet malt flavor with some banana and other fruit along with yeast. Very carbonated. Hides alcohol very well. Very smooth mouthfeel. Just a tad too sweet.

Bottled. Dark amber. Aroma of cinnamon, coriander and honey. Sweet and sugary, full bodied with rounded mouthfeel. Notes of almond. Salty finish. Typical Unibroue.

Pours is a almost bright orange with a huge head. Aroma is yeasty and musty. I also get some ginger and citrus in the nose. Flavor is strong and malty with some yeast and spices thrown in there. Alcohol make its presents as you take a sip. Very dry as it goes down. Overall very flavorful and zesty. Good for a sipping beer by the fire on a cold winter night. Not as good as La Terrible but close.

Cloudy light amber color; big creamy head. The aroma has a strong herbal touch (heather, mint…), with some malt and hop; magnesia. Good malty body, but not too sweet, again with an evident herbal note, and light liquorice at the end; too high carbonation and a bit too alcoholic. Good, but I don’t appreciate too much this herbal character.

2004 bottle (big surprise there), thanks to Jeff (radiomgb).
Pours a lightly coppery yellow-gold. Some lightly fiery oranges and lighter yellows in there. Big off white head as usual. Aroma is extremely peppery, tons of yeast, some coriander or something like that (orange rind, lemon or something quite astringent). As bottle breathes, aroma gets more alcoholic and perfumy, with some bitter hop notes and more citrus.
Flavor is peppery to the max, lots of sweet candi and sugary malt. Finishes with a dry, chewy yeast flavor, like a wit only more peppery. Alcohol is apparent throughout but not dominant. Seems oddly similar to the Stone 04, but that’s just my lack of sampling of this style. No lime leaf, but lots of light sugar flavors, pepper and yeast. I can’t quite get around the excessive spiciness, and the body is a bit too loose on the finish, but the malt, yeast and aroma are incredible. Hopefully some of the spice dies off in the aging.

Oh, so outstanding. Like a Belgian strong ale mixed with a biere de garde or over-strong saison. So complex, so drinkable, so smellable. Hazy amber, full head. Fun to sniff: rich aroma of candyish caramel, bread dough, spicy oregano and rosemary, bitter orange, mint. Hint of leather or barnyard? Is there brett in here? Medium sweetness up front quickly carried away by strong carbonation. Fizzy on the tongue. Yeasty spiciness is balanced by caramelized malts. Lingering yeastiness. Alcohol very well hidden, only present as a peppery dry finish. I love it. This was sampled fresh, but I could easily imagine 3-5 years of age in this one (although not more I don’t think).

Sampled at From The Vine beer tasting Jul 9th, 2004: I was wondering how Unibroue was going to maintain the Anniversary Year:ABV ratio as the years went on. This works just fine. I liked this one decidedly more than the 11. Pours a lightly hazy orange color with a thin off-white head and light lacing. The aroma is spicy/peppery with herbs and malt in the background. Medium-bodied and kind of 2-dimensional with regards to the flavor profile. Lots of spice (pepper and coriander) along with noticeable alcohol right from the get-go. There is some sweet fruit, malt and citrus in there and it would be superb if the other flavors were more detectable. The finish is nicely bitter. Overall this beer is on the verge of being wonderfully balanced and I am thinking a little aging would help a lot. I will definitely be revisiting this one.

Sampled at the Southside Beer Expo. Not quite as dark as it would seem. More like a cloudy pale ale, but with a very complex and spicy Belgian character.
