All the best things about winter in a beer; warming ginger creeps up on a robust dark velvet stout.

500ml bottle - Another good one, I’m edging over to the Dark Side with all these stouts I’ve just bought. Classic black body / tan head combo - the toastiness and roasted coffee aroma, coupled with an underlying spiciness leaves you salivating for the first sip. When it comes, warmth, coffee, liquorice, then the ginger sneaks in, then a dark chocolate, bitter burnt toast and nuts finish it of in the ending. Excellent stout. Oh Manchester, so much to answer for.

Bottle from The Bottle Shop, Canterbury. Black beer with dark brown edges, a bit of a gusher with a thick dark beige head. Ginger choc biscuit aroma. I rather like this to be honest. I like the ginger the sting the hop on the finish. Yep, pretty good.

Black, big big frothy tan head, gusher, good lacing
Aroma - Lots of spicy good quality ginger, dark deep rich malts, gingerbread malts, some plain ginger chocolate, great aroma
Taste as aroma, smooth ginger, plain chocolate, smooth dark rich malts, quite sweet, great flavour, don’t notice the 6.5%, well blended, yummy flavour
Palate - soft carb (eventually), medium body. Smooth rich malty spicy palate. Finish as main flavour, just smooth and yummy
Overall - This is great stout, the ginger / dark malts balance is just right. Another winner from Marble!

Bottle at the CP&K, Scopey’s Birthday Bash. Cheers Leighton. Opaque dark brown beer. Small pale tan head. Light airy palate, fairly dry. Very mild dark malts with a little lacto. Mild mellow ginger. Finishes sweet with mellow ginger warmth. A good idea this beer but I think would work better if it was bigger and richer but I guess it would then lose it’s heritage.

Bottle, thanks to Leighton. It pours very dark brown, with a thin tan head. The nose is dark fruit, blackcurrant, blueberry, ginger and chocolate. The taste is ginger, spice, charcoal, roasted malt, bitter chocolate, wood and burnt toast, with a dry-roasty finish. Medium body and moderate carbonation. Decent stuff.

Bottle shared at Paul’s big birthday bash at CPK, London. Pours brown with a moderate, foamy beige head. Big ginger nose with some nice chocolate accents. Medium to big sweet flavor with loads more ginger, light roast and some dark chocolate. Medium bodied with fine carbonation. Robust ginger finish with light sting, modest roast, good chocolate. Fantastic balance. Great integration between the ginger and chocolate character. Of course you need to like ginger to enjoy this beer, but the overall balance and nuance here is excellent.

Bottle purchased at 57 St Thomas Street Bar, Manchester in company of Loz, Baz, Jude, Kenny & Jenny 20.01.12 consumed at home 22.01.12 Pours very dark brown with a beige head. This is undoubtedly very smooth and agreeable though the ginger is not as up front as I expected, with the roastiness of the malts tipping this slightly more into a full on stout with just a mere sprinkling of ginger which wasn’t what I was expecting. Pleasant if a little restrained, great beer. A7 A4 T7 P4 Ov14 3.6
