Cask at the Greyfriar, Reading. Black with a thick but loose beige head. Chocolate with a pleasant smokiness. Very mellow, laid back mouthfeel. A bit of blackberry in the background. Really good easy-drinking stout; I rather enjoyed this.

Bottle from the Offie, Leicester. Extremely dark brown, opaque. A ring of khaki head encircles the glass. Turkish coffee grounds, earth, light notes of chocolate fudge and vanilla. The initial sweet taste turns bitter on the back of the tongue toward the finish with more vanilla, coffee and prune in the aftertaste. Highly carbonated, which is perfect for this beer. Gorgeous stout.

Bottle at home in Hackney - sourced from Beer Hawk. Pours deep brown with a moderate, foamy tan head. The nose has light ashy roast, chalky cocoa. Light sweet flavour with crunchy milk chocolate, bitter ash, baking cocoa. Light to medium bodied with fine carbonation. Drying finish, with more ashy roast, bittersweet chocolate, scorched earth. Maybe a little basic but not bad.

Bottle. Black body, off white head. Soft malty and caramelly aroma, full and nice. Clean, full yet soft classic stouty maltiness, quite lovely. Hah, wasn't too heavy on those notes at this point, but this was definitely a very tasty beer, perhaps the best Ilkley I've had yesterday. 7/4/7/4/14Update: On tap it wasn't as thrilling for some reason, still looked good with its black body and creamy tan head, toasty, cocoa and some chocolate cookie in the aroma, still solid, vaguely fruity. The taste was, however, a bit disappointingly light and dry, chocolate cookie and a bit of toast, oats perhaps, but huh, not as captivating as it was on the first go, but not far from it. 7/4/7/3/12. Putting a score in between the two, rounding up.
