Near black with a frothy, off-white head. Sweet malt and port on the nose, the mouthfeel is smooth and a little carbonated, and this delivers a rich, fruity stout with some chocolate and a smoked vibe

Bottle shared with Sarah at home picked up from Watford Sainsburys. A dark brown coloured pour with ruby red hues and a loose light tan head. Aroma is nutty roast, toasted malts, black malts, dried fruits, apple and a hint of liquorice. Palate is medium bodied, highish carbonation, dry woody finish. Flavour is composed of woody roast, bitter liquorice, black malts, burnt toast, dried fruits. Lingering bitter black roast, charred wood. Decent. ,

A nice dark, strong bitter and ideal for winter. Plenty of malt and a good flavour of alcohol coming through. A definite flavour of coffee and dried fruits.

Bottle from Sainsbury’s (obviously). Very dark brown, almost black. Very little head and a reasonable but not excessive amount of carbonation. Aroma of peat smoke, blackberry jam, liquorice, molasses. Taste is surprisingly dry. A tempered fruity bitter leads to a gorgeous rounded finish. A hint of sharpness in the aftertaste. Very, very good.

Bottle from Sainsburys. Black pour with a light tan head. Toffee, raisin, chocolate, licorice and coffee aromas with some rich port notes. Nice flavours of dark roast coffee, chocolate ice cream, black treacle, raisins and licorice. Packed full of flavour. Dry roast finish. Very tasty and something I’m drinking quite a bit at the mo thanks to Sainsbury’s 3 for a fiver deal.

Bottle from Sainsbury’s, High Wycombe. Deep brown with a small beige head and a light fizz. Charcoal at first, but it’s not overdone and is pleasingly balanced by milk chocolate. Dark fruits like prunes and dates come through to round out and balance the beer. Very impressive for a supermarket own brand, and I was astonished to see that it was brewed by Black Sheep, whose beers I normally dislike. Nice one.
