Draught at the brewery, 6/20/15
Reddish-amber, clear with a medium sized off-white head that slowly recedes to cover.
Interesting nose, I will give it that. Not your usual tropical/juicy fruit hop salad, yet nor is it a citrus/pine concoction. Rather, you’ve got leafy green spruce notes, with a touch of wintergreen, dry pine and plentiful cherry-like sweetness. I guess this is some ester and it’s quite interesting and unique. Reminds me very, very much of something like Gales Christmas ale or Harveys Christmas ale (can’t remember off-hand without going back and looking at my reviews). Sugars are light, though, mostly just pale malts and no weird bubble gum or cotton candy, nor is there any alcohol.
The flavor is even more akin to these traditional English christmas ales (and non-christmas ones too, the christmas ones are usually stronger, so it reminds me of those particularly). Sweet, yet nowhere cloying, with green, lush hops, a touch of candied orange and dry pine all balancing each other well. Ample carbonation helps relieve the high gravity nature and the malt is still well-attenuated yet sumptuous. Delicious cherry ester character lingers on, and increases with warming.
Not rating this as an American Double IPA, but more of an American/English Strong Ale hybrid.

Draft Great Lost Bear, clear amber with no head at all. Nose is oily pine resin and thick caramel malt.
Flavor starts with big caramel sweetness followed by lots of pine resin near the back side. Bitterness is abrupt and is gone real fast. The texture is syrupy and kind of sticky. My overall impression is that this is a standard IPA and nowhere near a DIPA. Because the bitterness is short lived with more malt then hops. If you like your IPA’s sweet, this could be appealing.

Cask at GBBF 2011, Day 2. Sweet malt and nice hop aroma, some faint hints of booze. Big sweet flavor, some candy, toast, and caramel. Medium to full in body with soft carbonation. Milt warming finish, light resinous bitterness, some toasty malt sugars. Very respectable.

At USA Cask Ale Bar, GBBF ’11, one-third pint, gravicask. Near-clear, amber coloured body, Tiny off-white head. Solid aromas of citrus fruits. Fresh taste of citric hops, a bite of pine needles, and finish of with a pleasurable dry hoppy bitterness. The alcohol is very well covered. Not heavy to drink at all (London, 03.08.2011).

Cask at GBBF 2011. An amber coloured pour with a small off white head on top. Hoppy, citrus fruit aroma. Tastes hoppy, citrus fruit, bitter, malty and dry. Slightly unbalanced for me but still very drinkable.
