Bottle 33 cl. Courtesy of yespr. Pours an opaque dark amber with an off-white head. Intensely citrusy hop aroma. Quite full-bodied, plenty of fruit and caramel but the citrusy hops dominate and leave an intense almost herbal bitterness. 020911

Bottled. An unclear brown beer with a thin brown head. The aroma has notes of alcohol, spices, and hops. The flavor is sweet with notes of alcohol, barley and rye malt, leading to a very bitter finish. Thanks yespr for sharing.

Shared bottle from the brewery, as The Kernel Big Brick Collaboration Red Rye Ale. ABV was 8.9%. Beautiful red colour, moderate off-white head. The aroma is malty with notes of Christmas spices, caramel and "spruce" hops. The flavour is malty with caramel, notes of piney hops.

Bottle at home in London, on the eve of my summer holiday. Pours an almost clear, deep ruby with a thick, off-white head. Huge hop aroma, pine, fresh grass, very raw grapefruit, and just faint spiciness. Flavor is very sweet but quickly offset by strong bitterness. There are notes of grain and toast, slight caramel, pine. Tons of resinous pine, in fact. Full bodied with fine carbonation and very oily. Warming finish with plenty of enamel-destroying, ultra dry hops. Given the oily character of the beer it is interesting how it dries out so much. Great stuff. Not for the faint of hop.

On tap at the Jolly Butchers, London on 14th June 2011. Slow-to-clear copper with yellowish foam and almost full lacing. Biscuit malt aroma, notes of Christmas cake and mulled-wine. Main taste is spicy with fruit, earth, liquorice, Christmas berries and an underlying, delayed hoppiness. Quite a sweet, rich finish. Engaging mouthfeel. Would be nice in front of an open fireplace in winter.

17th June 2011
Deep red-brown amber beer. Big pale tan head. Mild hoppy nose. Soft palate with a silky creamy texture, really quite luxuriant. Mildly bitter orange, a little marmalade and pine. Whisper of aniseed. More tangy orange with traces of grapefruit and peach. Silky creamy malt backdrop. Soft finish which is also semi dry. Really nice full on red.

Bottle at the Kernel Brewery. It pours red-brown with a thin off-white foamy head and moderate carbonation. The nose is farmyard, brown bread, rye, pine and caramel sweetness. The taste is caramel, charcoal, brown bread, rye, pine, toast, date, fig, brown sugar, astringent, wood and varnish, with a bitter-dry finish. The alcohol is well hidden. An interesting brew.
