Cask at Kings Head, Bristol. Pours near black with tan foam. Aroma: roasty toasty malts, citrus, pine. Taste: Light to moderate sweet, rich & roasty, dark chocolate, coffee hints, liquorice, grass/pine, moderate bitter finish. Medium body with soft carbonation. Not seen an Otley beer for a long while, nice to try this, tasty stuff.

Old rating from 01-03-15 - 500ml bottle from the brewery on my Wales road trip. Pours black with a small beige head. Aromas & tastes of chocolate, citrus, wood, liquorice & roast malt. Medium body. Dry bitter finish. Enjoyable. Shame the brewery is no more.

Draught at the Rake. Dark brown with a tiny head. Aroma is a bit chocolate malt and slightly hoppy. Tastes like a stout rather than a black IPA, quite chocolatey and a bit smoky. No real bitterness in the taste. Palate is slightly oily with very little carbonation. Can't really find the IPA part of this. --- Beer merged from original tick of Oxymoron on 09 Sep 2019 at 16:06 - Score: Appearance - 4 | Aroma - 7 | Flavor - 7 | Texture - 4 | Overall - 6. Bottle from Beers of Europe. Poured a clear dark brown with a frothy light tan head. The aroma is yeast, grassy citrus hop. The flavour is moderate bitter with a roasty, liqourice, big hop bitter palate and lingering bitter finish. Medium bodied with average carbonation.

Aroma is quite prominent in green, resinous hop. Fairly hoppy flavour with a decent roasted malt bitterness.

BOTTLE 50 CL. Opaque black, beige head with good lacing. Nice aroma: hoppy - mint and lemon rind, malt sweetness that blends nicely with the hops and just a hint of roast. The taste is balanced between hops, light malts and chocolaty roast, fresh hoppy bitter finish. Easy drinking, though the body is lacking at times. Still, a very good beer.

50cl bottle from Marks & Spencer, Camberley. A glossy pitch coloured pour with a loose tan head; creamy chocolate aroma; sharply bitter taste with a dry lactic body; leading to cofee grounds and burnt sugar and a long dry coffee finish. A pleasant drink, but to me this more a "stout with attitude" than a Black IPA,

Bottle from Saucy Pears. Appearance - opaque with a lovely lacy fawn head. Nose - chocolate and marmalade. Taste - hard yellow cheese, then chocolate, then quite bitter orange and dark malt. Palate - medium bodied with a creamy texture and a long dry finish. Overall - it did the black bit, but it didn’t quite do the IPA bit for me.
