Small disparate greige head over black beer. Peat exploding out of the glass, phenolic, Islay, tarred poles, the whole shebang. Great Islay malt whisky taste, if much less intense than similar R.I.S. examples. Rest is classical stout, the phenolic whisky remaining master. Undercarbonated, light watery feel; alcoholheat but not as one would expect from 13% ABV. Nice Islay character, more than the beer in se. Thanks to Stef!

Sampled at a quick RB tasting at CBC Clerkenwell, 12oz bottle pours an oily, deep brown. Rubbery and smokey nose, raisin, chocolate. Flavor has some malt and toast, very oily and rubbery, plenty of industrial notes, nail polish. Oily and hot finish.

330ml bottle bought at the wonderful Tuckers Maltings in September last year. Fawn-colured head over a black body. Dotted spots on the glass. Malt-fruity nose, sweet. Taste of syrup, jam and oak. Long-lived, peaty ending, drying and sweet. Classic slow sipper (Shared with Finn at djoeye at a rating session in Tromsø, 11.02.2017).

Bottle at the London Tasting, October 2016. My notes said this was from a clear bottle, I can’t imagine why any brewer would do that. Very heavy roast on the malt aroma, and there is some smoke which I attribute to the unnamed Islay whisky and well as the nearly burnt grain. Heavy palate, and some flavor of wood ashes in the finish.

Bottle split at the JK tasting, 04/10/16. Black with a moderate tan cap. Nose is prayed malts, spice, dark chocolate, toffee, dusty wood. Taste comprises dark malts, dark fruit tang, tannins, spice, charr, meaty depths, peaty tang. Medium + body, fine carbonation, drying close. Better than I expected for a 3 to 4 year old clear glass affair. Mellow barreled number but a little stale and low end for style.

330ml bottle. Pours black in colour with no head. Nose of smokey peated whisky, some roast malt and yeasty notes. Taste is sweet, roasted malt, molasses, peaty, smoked, boozy, warming, bitter coffee, dried fruits, raisins, and with some leathery bitterness. Oily and smooth mouthfeel, full to medium bodied, low carbonation, dry earthy roasted bitter finish. Quite sippable.

Bottle shared with D&C at the 1st Ipswich bottle share (West Country themed). Saved this one to be the evenings finisher. Expected big things. But it was pretty awful. Maybe, in a clear bottle, it had spoilt whilst being haphazardly stored in the small shop in Seaton, Devon, from where it was bought? Maybe we need to have another one sometime to see if that was the case, as was really hoping for a ’wow’ to end the night from a style we enjoy but just got an ’urgh’. It poured black, and lifeless. Most unpleasant aroma, rather putrid. Tasted a little better, rather sweet, light bitterness. Texture slick and oily. Peaty finish and over-powering alcohol.
