This new, deep-ruby-coloured beer has been brewed exclusively for this Wetherspoon real-ale festival. The use of dark chocolate and black malts creates a powerful, dark flavour, while the generous quantities of wheat malt give a smooth, biscuity note. A gentle hop bitterness completes the rich, opulent character.

Cask handpull at Shakespeare Head, JDW, Holborn. Very dark brown colour with lasting beige head. Slightly spicy brown malty beer. It’s got some choc, but mostly coffee which is lovely. It’s good. Drinkable, likeable. Good big flavours but balanced. Yep, I liked it. Touch of harshness and bitter which is good.

Cask-conditioned at the Commercial Rooms, Bristol 11/11/10. Medium brown with a hint of red and decent, off-white head. Aroma of slightly toasty, grainy malts, berry fruit, caramel and grassy hops. Flavour was sweet to start, with some milk chocolate, more fruit, floral hops and decent bitter finish. Very good.

Cask at The Central Bar, JDW. Pours an opaque, light ruby-brown with a lingering, light beige head. Holds an enticing dark malt aroma with perhaps some floral hops. Flavor has moderate sweetness, faint roast, and some interesting flowery notes. Light to medium in body with fine carbonation. The finish is light roasted malts, faint mocha and light, dry bitters. Pretty nice brew.

From cask. Pours slight tan and creamy yet with a dense head. Roasted dark malty, breadish and acidic roasted. Breadish too. Crisp hoppy and fruityflavoured. Simple.

[Cask at the Monks Retreat (JDW), Reading] Reddish-brown (lighter than many porters) with a moderate beige head. Dry and smokey with hints of tobacco and wood. Maybe a little thin, but OK.

Cask, handpull at The Standing Order, JDW, Edinburgh, with Craig, Stella & Kids, Jan, Charlotte & Loz, 30.10.10 Pours black as yer’ at’ with a creamy textured white/off-white head. Lovely tangy dark fruit, bit intense roastiness then this softens to give a nice bitter bite. Really tasty stuff. Hard to see past this for beer of the festival for me, lovely. A8 A4 T8 P4 Ov16 4.0
