Chandraratne Talpe Liyanage has travelled from Lion Brewery to Marston’s, in Staffordshire, to re-create a lower-strength version of this world-famous beer, now usually called ‘Dark’. This very dark beer has a complex aroma of chocolate, coffee and liquorice, leading to a smooth, rich palate and full flavour, with hints of chocolate, coffee and roast malt, resulting in a silky character and long finish.

Cask (handpump) @ The Standing Order, 62-66 George St, Edinburgh, Scotland EH2 2LR.>Clear dark black brown color with a average, frothy, good lacing, mostly lasting, beige to light brown head. Aroma is moderate to light heavy malty, roasted, caramel, dark malt, fruity. Flavor is moderate to heavy sweet and bitter with a average to long duration, toffee, bread, licorice, dark malt. Body is medium, texture is oily to watery (thin), carbonation is soft to flat. [20101030]

Cask at Central Bar JDW. Brown pour with ruby highlights and a strong, beige head. Sweet, dark malt nose with hints of chocolate and ripe berries. Flavor holds light sweetness, some minerality, light astringency and faint, roasted malts. Medium in body, fairly chewy with fine, smooth carbonation. The finish is lightly dry, with some sugars and faint dark malts. Pretty average.

From cask at Bankers Draft, Sheffield. Pours dark brown to black with a creamy and chocolate brown head. Aroma is roasted malty and slight fruity. Liqourice, toffee, bread and slight fruity in the flavour. Mild bitterness and subdued sweetness. Light bodied for the flavour which is rich malty. Ends mild bitter and lasting liqourice to toffee impression.

Cask, handpump at The Babbington, JDW, Derby, Derbyshire 06.11.10 Pours black with a light beige head. This is quite thin in the mouth with a little dark fruit. There is so little going on here, quite embarrasing that it shares the name as the bottle which is a lovely little beer. A6 A4 T5 P3 Ov11 2.9

[Cask at the Hope Tap (JDW), Reading] Deep brown, flat with no head. Plastic and glue dominate. There’s some chocolate and a bit of burnt malt in there, but it’s horribly thin and watery. An utter mess of a beer and a huge disappointment.

Cask at the Prince Arthur (JDW), Fleet. Deep mahogany in colour with a tan head; aroma of roasted malts and oats; smooth, dry and sweet with nutty roasted malt flavours and a hint of milk chocolate; the finish is warming and sweet.

Cask at the October ’Spoons fest, the Capitol, Forest Hill. Dark brown pour with a light tan head. Raisins, smoke, chocolate and coffee aromas. Flavours of dark fruits, coffee, raisins, a little spice and licorice. Dry, light bitter finish.

Cask at Standing Order, Edinburgh, Scotland. Black colour, light beige head. Aroma of some chocolate, light roast. Flavour is very watery, light chocolate, slightly bitter finish. Watery, thin bodied. Severe disappointment.

Cask @ Counting House, JDW. Black colour, medium tan head. Aroma of light roasted malts, hint of coffee. A bit non-descriptive. Flavour is lovely roasted malts, some coffee and slightly sour fruits, maybe blackcurrant. Smooth and very enjoyable.
