It may be cold outside, but there’s no time like the present to try Stone Cold (4.7%), this seasons copper coloured cracker from the Lymestone Brewery. Sacks full of Finest Pale malt, Crystal, Wheat and Oats deliver crisp biscuit flavours with light toast and toffee notes. Sweetness is balanced by spicy, bitter Millennium and Styrian Goldings hops giving pine, lemon and citrus flavours.

NWAF 23 Jan 13. Gyldenbrun. Lavt skum. Svak aroma. Litt frukt. Smaken er som et søtt sukkertøy med antydning til flatbrød i ettersmaken.

Cask at Metropolitan Bar(W’Spoons), Baker Street, London. An amber/brown coloured pour with a thin white head on top. Malty, fruity aroma. Tastes of caramel, malty, fruity, spice, almost peppery. Quite an interesting brew this one.

Hand-pulled pint in my local Wetherspoons on 12 Feb 2013. Mahogany body, bright and clean looking with a deep creamy head: the head was both creamy in texture as well as colour. The head left some good, thick lacing as the beer level fell away. The smell and taste were of roasted malts. Brown bread and home-made biscuity sort of aroma really. Dry and almost unsweetened feel to the flavours and mouthfeel. Mild bitterness towards the end but otherwise a weird mixed fruit/malt combination that didn’t really excite me.

Half pint shared with Finn, hand pulled cask at The National Winter Ales Festival. A golden-brown body to a bright, naked surface. Aroma of bread-like malts, semi-sweet. Spiced fruity taste joined by brown sugar. Bittersweet malty finish, long-lived. Likable (Manchester, 23.01.2013).

Cold served clear golden ale. Full bodied with small head. Has a very mild pale aroma and character in its taste but also malty. Mainly a bitterness for flavour.

Cask handpull at Samuel Peto JDW Folkestone. Very decent bitter. Clear copper colour with thin lasting beige head. I liked it. Good black pepper hop on finish. Goldings on the aroma? Really drinkable.

Cask at the Claude du Vall (JDW), Camberley. Amber gold with a dense cream head; aroma of orange marmalade; smooth and creamy texture, with a complex bunch of flavours - rich malts and molasses, but also sharply bitter with some citrus and pine resin thrown in for good measure; the finish is dry with a touch of fresh Germanic hops. I really enjoyed this.
