The Thomas Hooker Imperial Porter is a full-bodied dark lager which draws its roots to the stronger porters of 19th Century England which would evolve into today’s stronger stouts. The porter derives tremendous complexity from the use of 8 different malts blended to balance sweet, caramel flavor with the coffeeish taste supplied by a judicious use of dark roasted malts. This brew is generously hopped with German and American hops that come to life as the beer is allowed to warm to its ideal temperature of 58-60 degrees. A great brew to add that holiday warmth and cheer to any beer lover’s winter. CHEERS.

Bottled in 2005. Pours deep black into a tulip. Caramel and coffee notes. Bubbles hugging rim is about the only head. Creamy with roasted caramel and chocolate. Long, slightly bitter finish.

2005 bottling. Deep red-brown body with reddish highlights. Aroma of chocolate, bitter, piney hops, licorice, and coffee grinds. Bitter coffee body, charred malts, with a long, bitter roasty and hoppy finish. Hints of licorice and touches of caramel. Rich palate, dense flavor profile, reminding me a bit of Great Divide Yeti. One of those beers that wasn’t love at first sip, but improved in my mind dramatically after enjoying several ounces. A winner.

Thanks to jjpm74 for the trade (1 L bottle). Nose is chocolate, coffee, with a little plum aroma; Very bark brown with a small tan head; flavor of slightly smoky malts, coffee, and quite a little hop bitterness; the hops linger into the finish along with a little alcohol.

Thanks to cmaruschak for sharing. Lovely opaqye black color with a medium thick and foamy tan head. Thin sheet of lacing. The aroma is a shocker - the first thing I thought of was a Christmas beer. Tons of spices - cinnamon, nutmeg, etc erupt into the nasal passages. There is a bit of a roast character in the nose that comes through at times but it is overwhelmed by the spices. After the initial surprise this is pretty easy to enjoy. Medium body with lots of spice character, along with some roasted malt and bitter chocolate flavors. The finish is dry and somewhat bitter with coffee and hops. Whether this bottle was "off" or not, I liked it.

Pretty much black. Smooth body. Sweet, luscious milk chocolate and coffee character with marshmallows and a little bit of roastiness. Tasty, well-constructed. Not recognizeable as a Baltic, it is however an "imperial" porter. And a very good one at that. Thanks to Springslicker for the hookup!

On draught at XBF05. Deep brown-mahogany pour, perhaps darker than that, actually. Good light tan head and quite hazy. Aroma of chocolate, crisp lager yeast, chalk, dry roast and dark spices. Flavor is smooth and lightly creamy/chalky, with a mild lactic quality from the yeast. Lightly bitter/astringent roast, some cigar smoke lying in the background and an almost schwarzbier like finish. Not nearly as powerful as I was expecting, a much more reserved beer. Smooth and even mouthfeel shows much better consistency than the Resolution porter, to which I could not help but compare this. Flavors emerge nicely as it warms, with a good toffee flavor, hints of mocha and some light milk chocolate. I didnt like it that much at first, but it grows on you and is very well-made. I still liked the flavors in the Doppelbock more, but this is a solid offering. For a young sample, this is very mellow. And I really like that!

Bottled. Black. Thick, malty and salty. Licorice and molasses are evident, as is coffee and grass. The mouthfeel is clean and as it’s very hoppy for the style it also has a very bitter finish. Lacks the soft mouthfeel of a world class beer.
