Agostino Arioli has travelled to Wadworth Brewery, in Wiltshire, to re-create this deep amber-coloured beer especially for this Wetherspoon real-ale festival. The hoppy aroma contains fruit and berry notes, leading to a malty backbone in the flavour, with hints of hazelnut and honey, a clean bitterness and a complex finish.

Third of a cask pint in my local Wetherspoons on 17th March 2016. Having drank the original beer in Rome I was keen to see if it matched my score and words from 2013. I was not so keen on this version to be honest. Amber coloured beer with a soft off-white topping. Strange aroma and taste, honey like with a wheat/grainy undertone, it didn’t sit well or seem balanced to me. Disappointed.

Cask at the Hope Tap (JDW), Reading. Hazy golden-amber with a thick off-white head. Nice frothy mouthfeel. Obvious pear drops in the whiff. Some honey at first, definitely a sweet one this. Citrus comes through, giving just enough sharpness and bitterness to balance- but only just. Little floral notes. Actually I’m liking this better the more I drink, it’s light and happy and a perfect match for the gorgeous spring sunshine which is quite warm in the suntrap courtyard at this pub. Going to my head but bringing a smile to my face. All the better for having got rid of the taste of the dreadful Mordue Wheat I’d had just before. Even if they brewed this as an ale it has something of the feel of a hellerbock about it, so well done Waddys on achieving that. Yep, a happy beer this. I like it. Despite the touch of marzipan in the aftertaste and the initially offputting peardrops. Yay!

Cask @ Moon Under Water, Manchester. Golden with a creamy head. Has a thinnish sugary bubble-gum sweetness in taste, with a lingering bitterness in its aftertaste. Didn’t feel its strength when supping.

Cask at Willow Walk. It pours clear rich amber with a small off-white head. The aroma is sweet, spicy, biscuit, cereal, grain and alcohol. The taste is bitter - sweet, grainy, cereal, alcohol sting, white bread, ginger & lemon tea and earth with a spiced finish. Medium body, low carbonation and oily mouth - feel. Pretty rough aound the edges....
