A smooth, deep amber coloured ale with a complex malt, fruit and hop flavour. Strong and distinctive like the powerful sleek Scottish Wildcat it is named after.

Bottle, over-priced, from a gift-shop in Aviemore. Pours clear brown, no head. Aromas are sweet toffee, light herbs. Taste is sweet too. Not a fan.

I actually saw one of these wild Highland cats in a field not far from Wick. Pretty cool - bigger than the average housecat. Light brown. Warm nutty nose. Quite nutty, sweet caramel finish.

At home: 500ml bottle, best before 28 Aug 2013, poured into a UK pint sleeve on 26 sep 2012. Lovely amber coloured body with a full, deep foam head, like an off-white snow blanket. The nose is all about roasted and toasted malts: they indicate a rich, strong malty brew is below and they are not far wrong. The taste as the aroma suggests is malty molasses with some butterscotch and caramel added into the mix: this isn’t overly sweet though, so some hops must help to give it a balance and slight bitter finish. The body feel isn’t as rich or creamy as the nose would have you believe: this is robust brew more than a smooth one. A Winter Warmer sort of beer without the Smoking Jacket.

50cl bottle in 1780 restaurant. Pours amber with a nicely proportioned head. The nose has fudge which then develops into millionaire shortbread. The taste has more of this millionaire shortbread. The palate has good ’length and girth’ my friends have just told me. Seriouisly though, medium to large in structure with a creamy texture that leads into a creamy dry finish. Overall, a good beer!

Bottle. Dark amber with a beige head. Aroma of toffee, pears, flowers. Taste is moderately sweet with toasted toffee, pear, dried fruit, spices. Carbonation fails to quite hide slightly dead mouthfeel, but it’s not too bad. Lingering fruity hops at the end. Shame about the mouthfeel, but the toffee and fruit flavours have some depth and the sweetness is nicely cleaned up at the end.

500ml bottle from Dobbies garden centre in Ashford. Chestnut colour, clear, thin beige head. Toffeeish bitter. To be honset I’m not that impressed. Just some buttery toffee and that’s about it. God I detest pasteurised bottled beer.

Brought back for me by a friend and rated June 2009. Pours a beautiful clean copper colour, with a beige head that has good retention, and leaves great dirty lace and coats the brew. Tiny bubble carbonation with some bigger bubbles stuck to the side of the glass. Grainy nose, with some nice sweet malt, caramel, notes of molasse, burnt malt and dark fruits. The mouthfeel and flavour are laking though (after having some great aromas). Taste of watered-down caramel, fruits, and bread in the aftertaste. Still, a very good bitter that is more refreshing than punchy.
