A black beer brewed with roasted barley malt and challenger hops. Then freshly ground Arabica coffee beans, blended especially for Dark Star, are added to the copper for a few minutes after the boil to provide a rich and complementary coffee aroma. NOT EVERYONE’S CUP OF TEA!

Cask @ Warrington Oktoberfest. Roasted, toasty, coffee aroma, Bitter coffee flavour is so strong that it doesn’t give anything else a chance to come through. An interesting one off but not worth repeating.

Cask-GBBF. Black with a light brown head leaving some lace. Coffee dominates the aroma, with some earthy notes. Roast flavour, burned and with coffee notes. Certainly lives up to its name.

(Cask at Akkurat, Stockholm) Colour is very dark brown, almost black with a pale brown frothy head. Nose is roasted with freshly ground coffee and hints of citrus. Taste is roasted with the same character of freshly ground black coffee. Dry, long, bitter finish. Medium body. Not really complex and hardly balanced, but great coffee character. If you like your coffee strong and black, go for it. If not, stay away.

Cask handpull at County Hotel, JDW, Ashford. Black beer with beige head. Wonderful coffee aroma. Like opening a fresh jar of Maxwell House. Bit powdery in mouth, coffee everywhere with a dry powdery finish. Not exactly balanced. Enjoyable, but not subtle

Cask conditioned at Merton Beer Festival Sat 18th Feb. Definately smells like espresso and those coffee beans were very much in evidence with each slurp but in some casesgetting things right ’less is more’ and I personally think that they had ovedone it a bit on the coffee front and it had taken over a bit too much, a litle bit less would have seen a marked improvement. Although it was very dark it did lack a little something in the appearance that a can’t quite put my finger on but that you get with some stouts. Its small head didn’t hang around for long but the burnt roasted coffee taste did. Not at all bad but could have been so much better with a bit of tweaking on those coffee beans.

[Cask at The Evening Star, Brighton] An opaque deep red beer with a fine lasting chocolate brown head. The aroma is sweet roasted, but very light. The flavor is sweet malty and roasty with coffee notes, though less than expected. I think it was served too cold.
