Nearly four years ago, we hired some Angels to work their magic on all manners of oak barrels and beers in our barrel program. As Angels go, they’re alright. Sometimes they misplace barrels. Other times, they’re selfish and hide the best barrels. And at least one of these Angels is mischievous from time to time adding grapes to the barrels to see what might happen.

Recently, we found some of these "Angels Barrels" which we’d lost over time. After tasting them, we decided to marry some of the barrels together creating a time in a bottle snapshot of some of our favorite Angel’s Share barrels. This Grand Cru bottling has been thoughtfully blended to bridge the first batches with our most recent releases. We hope that you, like us and our Angels, find it worthy of the designation Angels Share Grand Cru.

Bottle shared at the mega tasting, 2014. It pours deep brown with a minimal head. The nose is wood, meaty, earth, vanilla, coconut, tangy dark fruits, dried berry and chocolate. The taste is tart white grape, wood, vanilla, some acidity, gooseberry, leather, berry, some alcohol warmth and toasted brown sugar with a smooth finish. Medium-full body, low carbonation and sticky mouth-feel. I assume the tangy/tart element has increased with age, but it doesn’t detract from the beer. Interesting, good depth and balance. Rather nice indeed.

Bottle shared at a modest tasting in London. Many thanks to Paul for this geriatric beer. Pours clear, ruby-brown with a faint, bubbly tan head. Interesting aroma, lots of leather, feet, dried berries, tart fruits, plums. Well and tart flavor, moderately sweet with more leathery fruits, berries, earth, wet wood, some brown sugar, faint chalky cocoa, bread, cherries. Medium to full bodied with soft carbonation. Tangy fruit finish, somewhat tannic, dry woodiness, some earthy bitterness, brown sugar, burnt toffee. Quite interesting. The character has likely changed dramatically over the last few years but it is still a complex and enticing beer.

375mL bottle, sent from cpetrone84 (thanks a lot, Chris), pours a deep dark mahogany with almost no head - looks almost like a port wine or some similar liqueur. Nose is ultra-complex and deep, with what seems like a blend of brandy and bourbon, rich notes of dates and figs, liqueur, and some chocolate coated cherries. Flavour is uber-decadent and complex, with that same mix of bourbon and brandy, vanilla, dark fruits (though less than I detected on the nose), and a bit of chocolate - there's also quite a prominent alcohol burn on the finish, but it is very fitting here. The carbonation is very low, almost flat, as with the other versions -- but I feel this works here, as it does in the other ones. Exceptional. My absolute favourite of The Angel's Share versions. Shame this one isn't available anymore.

Beautiful interaction caramel maltiness and grapes with a nice woody character and a light nuttiness. This bowled me over again.

Opaque black beer. Bubbly biscuit coloured head. Oaky vanilla chocolate malt nose. Soft smooth palate., a little dry. Very moderate carbonation. Oaky dark chocolate, rich. Subtle vanilla and spicy Port Wine. Equally subtle blackcurrant, red berry fruits and brandy. Minerals and a little coffee. The only thing I can’t taste is the grapes! Warming finish. Very good stuff!

375ml bottle pours a deep brown with a cloudy beige head. Nose has a ton of cherry, vanilla, brown sugar, a little oak. Flavor has soured, cherries, burnt sugar, malty, sweet, a little vanilla, some wood. Full bodied, sour, dry finish. Uh oh, its infected.

Bottle courtesy of GT2, thanks! Murky, syrupy brown, scant head with no retention. Aroma of chocolate syrup and balsamic vinegar. Taste has a sticky sweet start, then changes to tawny port and vinegar finish. OK.

bottle at the RBSG 2010 - This brew smells of malt, bourbon, and some fruity notes. The flavor is of sweet malt, bourbon, wood, and a touch of dark fruit. It’s full bodied yet lively on the palate. Excellent beer. I’m glad to have had a chance to try it.

Bottle shared by badnewsbeers. Muddy, opaque orange-brown body, thin cream head. Tart nose with plum and toffee, funky, with vinegar, sweet raisins, caramel, and roast. Somewhat tart body but balanced by firm bitterness- toffee, roast, and grape with potent alcohol and tannic oak. Hints of chocolate. A very good "warmer."
