An Amber coloured beer with plenty of character, bursting with hoppiness
The History

Established in 1874 under the guidance of James Clerk Maxwell the Cavendish laboratory has had many notable researchers as students and also staff. Bottle from JSG Wine Merchants, Hills Road, Cambridge. Dark gold, over-carbonated. Little white head sitting proudly on the top. Sweet smell of caramel/taffy, somewhat sickly if truth be told. Taste isn’t much better: sweet and malty with a misplaced spiciness. The flavour in the finish is short, but the heavy carbonation lingers on the tongue. I just don’t care for it all that much. I should say that I’m not (usually) a fan of First Gold hops, so this was never going to appeal to me.

Bottle from home from Waitrose picked up by the lovely Sarah. Clear golden coloured pour with a loose sticky white head. Aroma is earthy hay, sweet careml , some diacetyl maybe. English yeast on the nose as well. Flavour is medium sweet, caramel, damp hay. Dfinitey a little diacetyl, but not too offensive. Medium palate, some sweetness, moderate carbonation and some grain tanin.

Bottle - Xmas gift. Poured a clear, light amber with a thin white head and some lacing. Aroma of straw, orange and a musky note. Malty initial flavour with some caramel and grass. Finish was brown sugar, mild smokey character and some chewy grain. Fairly plain bitter.

Bottle at home on 15th January 2013; Christmas gift. Pours golden amber with thin white part-lacing foam. Rich hoppy aroma. Deliciously hoppy in-mouth with tangy citrus, a little smoke and savoury touches. Finish is fairly citric and biscuit-malty with developing bitterness. Zingy, engaging texture and medium body. Excellent.

Cask at the Wandsworth Common Spring BF, Le Gothique, London. Pours clear gold with a foamy, white head. Dry hay nose with some dough, white sugar and straw. Medium sweet flavor with doughy malts and bitter straw. Light bodied with fine carbonation. Good condition. Doughy malt finish with some toasty hay lending a little hop bite. Nice beer overall.
