Juniper and piney hops build the framework for this bold dark ale. With its assertive bitterness and sweet malt finish, this beer stands tall above the rest.

Can from Total Wine in Sacramento, CA. Pours dark brown with a creamy/bubbly tan head. Aroma of evergreen - at least pine - and some dark malt. Med body or so. Flavor is dark, earthy chocolate with evergreen - which may be more than pine, but at least pine. Finishes not entirely dry and piney hoppy bitter. Not to mention chocolate tagging along. Good Black IPA.

12oz can pours with a dark mahogany colored body that supports a nice fairly tight mocha head that leaves behind some spotty lacing. Pretty good looking beer. The aroma offers up chocolate malts, dark roasted malts, a sliver of earthy ashy burnt malts and then light caramel malts blended into spicy rye bread almost mineral like sensation. The taste delivers a smooth supple mouth feel that ushers in dark roasted malts to almost ashy burnt maltiness. Just beyond that lies a pleasing chocolate malt note that takes the lead in the flavor to midway. Into the finish a modestly bitter mineral like and pine like hoppiness joins in to carve out more depth to the experience. This is pretty darn nice. A great rich roasty elixir.

Can from a Lazy Dog Dark brown with a huge frothy tan head that slowly recedes. Coffee and roast on the nose with lots of citrus and pine to counter. Floral citrus and pine with a fairly assertive roasty caramel maltiness. The juniper is a bit strong for my taste but this isn’t too shabby overall.

Draught at the Avenue, 12/9/16.
Dark cocoa, clear, with strong magenta highlights throughout. Dark beige head atop shows moderate to moderately-strong retention.
Strong pine and juicy grapefruit with wintergreen, tar and treacle behind it. There’s, fortunately, enough base malt here creating a softer caramel edge to help balance the aggressive pine and dark malt notes. Clean, with some resin as seems inevitable for this "style". Very fruity.
Fruity and full of pine, sap, treacle, light char and more caramel in the mouth, creating an almost balanced IPA that still seems to be just a touch too bitter and roasty, for me anyways. Still, a respectable job on a difficult style; the moderately soft malt sugars and strong fruity edge do go a long way here.

T42 Bottleshare. Thanks to Colin. Hazy deep brown - amber beer, small pale tan head. Palate is smooth with reasonable fine carbonation. Soft dark malts, some cream and and a little dark chocolate. Modest dark fruits. Light piney hop. Dry finish. Pine and dark choc linger on. Not bad.

Bottle shared on Level 42 12/01/2016. Many thanks to Colin for this one. A clear nutty brown coloured pour with a loose off white head. Aroma is woody vanilla, coconut, brown sugars, molasses. Flavour is composed of semi sweet brown bready, nutty malts, vanilla. Palate is medium sweet, moderate carbonation, creamy. Good.

Bottle shared at level 42, cheers Coleen. It pours clear deep brown with a decent enough beige head. The aroma is earthy, toasty malts, pine, cocoa and a touch of caramel. The taste is bitter - sweet, roasted malt, cocoa, earthy, brown bread, wood, pine, general citrus peel vibe and a touch of caramel with a dry finish. Medium body and average carbonation. Decent example of the style.
