In 1975 Anchor released the first holiday beer in America since Prohibition. Each year since 1975, Anchor Brewing has created a distinctive Christmas Ale. A rich, dark spiced ale, our secret recipe is different every year—as is the tree on the label—but the intent remains the same: joy and celebration of the newness of life. With a heavily guarded, secret recipe, Christmas Ale is sold only from early November to mid-January.

Along with an evolving recipe, Christmas Ale portrays a new label every year. Since ancient times, trees have symbolized the winter solstice when the earth, with its seasons, appears born anew. The tree on this year’s label, Jeffrey Pine, Pinus jeffreyi), was hand-drawn by Bay Area artist James Stitt, who has been creating Anchor’s Christmas Ale labels since 1975.

Anchor Christmas Ale is perfect for cozy nights by the fire, and it pairs well with holiday fare, whether it is a roasted turkey dinner, sweet potato pie, or roasted chestnuts. A beloved tradition for many Anchor fans is to collect multiple years of Christmas Ale. Stored in a dark and cool place, the beer remains intriguing and drinkable for years. Different nuances emerge as the flavor mellows slightly, much like the memories of great holiday seasons past. The beer’s wintry spiced flavors evolve, making vertical tastings a tasty holiday activity. Celebrate the holidays with Anchor Christmas Ale, a tradition since 1975.

2008 Vinatge. Very dark brown beer, clear. Light semi dry palate. Light malt and very light cinnamon and other spices. Crisp and refreshing. This a makes a pleasant change from the usual over spiced Christmas Beers. Finishes crisp and minerally.

2008 vintage, one year old. Magnum bottle. Huge spice, licorice, anise, cinnamon, can’t really tell. Roasty bitterness that is stout-like. Fresh dark fruit: cherry, blueberry. Very interesting--rich yet rather light-bodied. Very fruity, with too much spice to drink much of, yet it’s fun.

My first foray into Anchor’s Special Ale, and I found one from 2008, really nice complexity that is usual from Anchor, malty spiciness and some citrus or vegetable flavor with a nice hop finish, really nice ale, but i think this is one of those beers that i like now that ive been expanding my palate for a little while, i dont think i would enjoy this when i was still a novice drinker, too complex for a newbie. New rating for the 09 vintage- pretty much the same rating as last year, but this years ale is a little less veggie and a little more spice. This one is an enjoyable christmas ale, and like most ales that come out around now, i can only have one until i get sick of it. dark ruby color, almost black, very little head that leaves good lacing. aroma is what you’d expect, malt sweetness, spices, and a little hop bite in the back of the throat. nice, better than last year. New Rating for the ’10 vintage. This is the best vintage yet. very little malt sweetness which is something i cant stand from a lot of the christmas or holiday ales, it does nothing for the enjoyment of the beer, it just makes is sickly sweet. this has very very little of that and relies more on a delicious blend of spices with nutmeg and cinnamon in the forefront. absolutely delicious beer and im very happy to give this a little better rating.

2008. Pours deep mahogany into a shaker. Fluffy mocha head with medium retention leaves sheet lacing as it recedes to skim surface. Nutmeg, cinnamon and clove aromas. Creamy and full with nuts and pumpkin spices upfront and a slightly resinous hop finish.

2008 Bottle: Poured a dark black brown with a lacing light brown head. Aroma is spice almost ginger bread like along with some berry. Taste is fruity with suttle spice off set, there also a coffee bean/ porter like hint. Finish is more of that spice.
