A deep, bold nut brown ale beautifully balanced with rich dark malts and a complex hop character converging to reveal a simply enchanting elixir.

Bottle. Clear dark brown with an inch of beige head that never quite disappears. Aroma of toffee, licorice and grass, some spices. A little watery under the initial richness. Taste is sweet, then dries out, with toffee, some dried fruit, spices, hints of vinegar. The flavours are OK, the balance is rather good. Agreeable.

Pours black with ruby highlights and a large head.Nose shows soy sauce, winey notes, caramel and nutty malt. Luckily the soy sauce and wine aspect is relatively faint.Flavours are more aggressive, with more emphasis on the roasted malt, including some coffee notes. Unfortunately the winey character is still present and there’s a biting herbal astringency in the finish.Carbonation is too high by far.

Medium beige head. Deep dark red body. Roasty raisiny paper aroma (clearly oxidized) with earthy caramelly notes. Dry-sweet papery earthy caramelly taste with buttery notes. Mid-bodied. Mild, soft mouthfeel. Dry roasty earthy soy sauce aftertaste with fruity papery notes. Probably a bit old. Should rerate. (0.355l bottle, Café Amsterdam, San Francisco.)

Used my Newcastle glass. 12 oz bottle. Mahogany color. Soft carbonation. Tiny ¼ inch white head barely noticeable on the surface. Nose is very nutty with roasted malt and a stale, mustiness. The flavor starts with caramel malt with the finish having light roasted nuttiness with the slightest hint of hops. Light bodied and a bit too thin. An easy drinking Brown Ale that will not make you to full or bloated. Some drinkability however, still very average.

Pours clear mahogany into a Sam glass. Off-white micro head with medium retention recedes to skim surface. Sweet caramel and nutbread aromas. Dry with sweet nutty caramel and pumpernickel from front to back. Dry, medium length cocoa finish.

12oz bottle picked up at Plaza Liquors
Appearance: Clear dark brown with a medium sized off-white head that dissipates fairly quick leaving very little lacing
Aroma: Sweet toasted malts, dark ripe fruit, toffee and nutty
Taste: Sweet caramel, toasted malts, wet grains with a slight bitterness in the finish
OK, but not for me.

A deep reddish brown ale with a thin moka head. In aroma, a pleasant burned caramel malt, dark fruit esters. In mouth, a spiced roasted coffee malt with light butterscotch notes, oily mouthfeel, not bad. Bottle at Maggie’s on the River, August 27, 2010.
