12 ounce bottle from Market Street Wine Shop, Downtown location, Charlottesville, VA. Pours a dark ruby tinted brown color with a medium head. Good head retention and lacing. Aroma is molasses, chocolate, nutty notes and husky malt notes. Taste is chocolate, nutty notes and faint hops in the finish. Also just a faint note of coffee and molasses. Medium bodied. Nice and refreshing.

Bottled. Amber colour, not much head. Aroma is mild chocolate, some caramel. Mild sourness as well. Flavour is quite much the same with some quite fruity sour notes,

12 oz bottle from World Market; Nose of nuts, caramel with a maple twinge. Clear brown with a medium glass-lacing head. Flavor has a little peppriness, caramel, toffee, and a hint of bitterness. Actually a decent brown, beats the hell out of Newcastle!

Bottle from Utobeer. Very dark brown colour with thin disappearing head. Some dry malt on aroma, some yeastiness. Mouthfeel is ok, but nothing interesting, flavours are some sour fruit and some dry malt. Bit toasty. Bit of nuttiness I suppose, some drying on tongue on finish. Fine, but rather bland and dull I thought. Not even as interesting as a British premium bitter of this strength. The malts are there, but don’t impart sufficient flavour. No bad or off flavours.

I drank a bunch of these beers. It looks like a nice brown ale and tastes and smells like a nice brown ale, but that is all. Good brown ale to chug, but not much good for anything else. Mostly just a gimmick brew.
