Originally a tweak of Eugene City Tracktown 100 Meter Ale, reformulated for release as Captain Sig’s Deadliest Ale
Style: India Red Ale. Dedicated to the Hansen brothers - Sig, Edgar, and Norman - the Rogues of the Bering Sea. Portions of proceeds of Deadliest Ale will support the Fishermans Fund. Deep red in color, this ale starts off with a floral, slightly citrus hop nose, hop flavor soon fades into the malty backbone of this red ale.

On tap at the Rogue Public House in San Francisco. Pours with a clear copper-bronze hued body with a large and lasting, just off-white head. The head clings to the side of the glass. Aromas are hoppy (citrus, cascade, other C-hops), sticky, orange, pine. Malt bill is bready with a large dose of caramel/crystal. Flavors are caramel, fruity, sweet, bitter balance. Orange tea. Citrus (cascade primarily) hops. Lively bubbles, medium bodied. Somewhat dry despite the caramel.

From a 650ml bottle on 6/4/2011. Mine was labelled Northwestern rather than Deadliest Ale. Pours a very cloudy dark amber, almost looks like soup! Has a big tan head. Has a very nice and quite typical American IPA aroma of caramel and toffee malt, along with citrus fruit and pine. Tastes like it smells, starting with sweet caramel and toffee malt, and some nutty notes, followed by citrus fruit, including orange and grapefruit. The hops in this one are quite big, but nicely balanced by the malt. To date, I’ve found Rogue to be a bit hit and miss, but this one is excellent.

Appearance: Slightly hazy amber with a hug beige head and lots of sticky lacing
Aroma: Grapefruit, caramel and pine
Taste: Caramel malts, grapefruit and with a slightly bitter pine oily finish
A nice beer.

A hazed copper ale with a thin dark off white head. In aroma, doughy malt with loads of green hops, orange marmelade or rye bred (as Karl puts it). In mouth, a classic nutty amber left coast ale with c-hops, nutty malts, treacle, very nice. Bottled, at ROC Empire Brewfest, Feb. 19 2011.

Big bottle as Northwestern Ale, 6.5% ABV, bought at Vinmonopolet Vika in Oslo. Rocky, off-white head lacing the glass as it goes down. Hazy, orange-brown body, muddy last pour. Dried fruits to the nose. Ripe, blood oranges mixed with apricot and chocolate malts to the taste buds. Notes of grapefruits in a rounded fruit bittersweet ending. Nice (hotel room, 10.01.2011).

(Bottle, Stockholm Beer Festival, 9 Oct 2010) Hazy amber colour with frothy, beige head. Fruity, malty nose with citrus, dried fruit, apricots and hints of pine needles. Fruity, malty taste with notes of citrus, caramel, hints of pine needles and a generous citrussy/piney bitterness in the finish. Malt to match the generous hop character. More than medium body, fairly sweet. Well constructed and very tasty IPA.

Bottle: Poured an amber color ale with a large foamy head with good retention and some good lacing. Aroma of earthy hops with bitter notes and medium caramel malt. Taste is a nice enough mix between some earthy hops with some bitter notes and a caramel mat heavy presence. Body is above average with good carbonation. Well brewed and refreshing though nothing to write home about.

22 oz bomber purchased at The Wine and Cheese Place in St Louis, Missouri. Pour is quite hazy darker golden, almost ruby. The head is large, three inches, off white and lasting. When it eventually falls, there is nice lacing. Aroma is citrus and resin hops, along with a nice bittersweet toasted malt. Beyond that is a pleasant floral and honey sweetness in the back. Taste is the resin hops mostly upfront, and they are a bit jagged and bitter. Following the resin is some of the citrus sweetness and toasty malt, finishing with the house Rogue yeast character. The taste lacked some of the subtly and balance of the nose, though was still nice enough. Palate is medium bodied, lower carbonation and the resin rough aftertaste.
